Swiggy: Delivering the Dream of Atmanirbhar Bharat
Swiggy has started delivering food from street vendors. Why now? Why not earlier? ReadOn
In a first of its kind project, Swiggy has partnered with the Government for Prime Minister Street Vendor’s AtmaNibhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) Scheme.
Under this scheme, a total of 1,47,000 street-food vendors have registered. In the first phase, Swiggy will onboard 36,000 vendors across 125 tier 2 and tier 3 cities.
Currently, given the priority that Swiggy places on the safety of its consumers, restaurants without a valid FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) registration are not onboarded.
FSSAI has certain rules and guidelines, failing which, a restaurant is denied the licence. The guidelines include several hygiene provisions, which street vendors fail to qualify.
In order to get a valid FSSAI registration, the street vendors need to be trained on good hygiene practices. Swiggy will now facilitate a Food Safety Training and Certification (FOSTAC) in partnership with FSSAI for the street vendors. This will help street vendors qualify FSSAI's guidelines on food safety.
This will not only ensure more options as well as safety for the consumer (yay!) but also help revive the livelihoods of street vendors who were among the hardest hit by the pandemic.
To increase adoption and ensure the vendors get enough orders, Swiggy has created a special destination on its app where customers can discover their favourite street-food vendors and order the unique food every region has to offer (mouth watering already?).
This project shows how start-ups can work closely with the government to solve uniquely Indian problems much more creatively.
