In Conversation with Founder of Wright Research
A peek inside the world of Robo-advisory and investments.
Sonam Srivastava is the Founder of Wright Research, a robo-advisory investment manager. They are one of the most popular managers on the Smallcase platform.
Sonam’s been in the investment advisory space for 9+ years and her company, Wright Research has been granted investment via the Government of India Nidhi Seed Support System (SSS).
What does Wright Research do and how does quant and robotics work in making investment decisions? Hear it from Sonam herself:
Numbers: Forever Love
Sonam’s first interaction with the stock markets happened at a very young age. She was in school when her father allowed her to operate his trading account. Those chart patterns gave a video-game kinda vibe to her, and she got hooked in no time.
She went on to finish her graduation in Chemical Engineering from IIT Kanpur, alongside pursuing CFA. And thus, began her journey in the field of finance as an algorithm developer at a hedge fund called Forefront Capital (which was started by Radhika Gupta, who is now the MD and CEO of Edelweiss Asset Management).
When Forefront Capital was acquired by Edelweiss, she continued her job there as an algorithm designer. Then she moved on to HSBC to gain some more and diverse experience.
After being armed fully with knowledge and experience, Sonam started Wright Research.
What does Wright Research do?
They use robo-advisory and quants to process data and create decision models. These models are then used to make investment decisions. Currently, theirs is a team of five people who handle a portfolio size of approx. Rs. 50 crores, with 3000+ investors.
For equity investments, Wright Research has found a blessing in Smallcase. When they build a portfolio of stocks for their clients, the distribution of this portfolio gets easy with Smallcase. All that the clients have to do is click the "buy" button on Smallcase and the stocks will be purchased and transferred to their demat accounts. In exchange for the tech support and high visibility, Wright research has to share 20% of their revenue with Smallcase.
Apart from equity investments via Smallcase, Wright Research has other product advisories such as for US ETFs, Mutual Funds and Futures and Options.
Investment Philosophy at Wright Research
They focus on two themes: equity factor research & market regime modeling. With the combination of two, they find out the market risks and trends. Recently, momentum investing has done well, so their models give more weightage to such stocks.
Starting from scratch, Sonam Srivastava and Wright Research are now on their way to make a mark in the investment world!
