Changing the face of Indian Urban Mobility: Reliance
While The Digital India Wars have definitely intensified, Jio and Mr. Ambani are looking to disrupt yet another industry - urban mobility.
In April 2020, Reliance raised its stake in a US based transport company skyTran Inc. to 26.3%. skyTran is making driver-less, zero-emission vehicles that will ferry passengers through magnetically levitated (mag-lev) pods. The company has partnered with NASA and Israel Aerospace Industries to develop the technology.
In a country where urban mobility (traffic jams) and pollution are major problems, skyTran could prove to be a great solution. And it couldn't have found a better partner in India to deal with the red-tapism and bureaucracy.
skyTran could prove to be a game changer in short distance, quick transportation, and could complement the existing metro-rail infrastructure too. Reliance is also looking for a Chief Technical Officer for this business (they are getting serious about this!).
With skyTran in its kitty, can Reliance yet again disrupt another industry and take "established players" like Uber and Ola for a ride?
Will be interesting to see how this one turns out.
Till then, stay tuned, stay safe and ReadOn.
