🤯 80% Market Share in 7 years: How did Astrotalk do it?
From astrology to IPO, this is how Astrotalk is writing its future.
Astrotalk's stars are shining bright.
It recently raised $20 million from New-York based Left Lane Capital in its “pre-IPO” round.
Yep. Another startup is planning to get listed. But it aims to do so only after it touches a revenue of Rs. 2000 crores!
Now, that's crazy because they claim to command an 80% market share already.
And here's how Astrotalk has grown:
So, does the target even look realistic?
Well, Astrotalk is not your typical startup.
It barely was in the news for the funds it raised. It had raised just Rs. 6 crores back in 2021 before this pre-IPO round.
It also turned profitable in 2020, within 3 years of launch!
Their differentiator?
They understood their ICP (ideal customer persona) really well.
Understanding the market is one thing, and being able to draw actionable insights is another. Astrotalk did that as well.
Let's look at a few examples.
It started as a video call platform but soon found out that its users were more comfortable with voice calls because of privacy problems.
If the user had a 1 min balance to talk to an astrologer and still placed a call, they would have a bad experience. Their fault, right?
But they would blame the app! So for their users’ good, Astrotalk stipulated a minimum balance for a 5 min call.
Astrotalk walked the tough path with Internet + authentic astrology - two super difficult-to-trust things.
It made for the perfect Cold Start Problem (giving people strong enough reason to adopt product usage and unlock network effects).
Astrotalk's solution? A free 5 min session.
It proved - you can trust Indians to pay you if they see value; invalidating Uber CEO’s claims “Indians are not willing to pay”.
The idea of Astrotalk (online astrology) was not new.
It was execution that made all the difference - how Astrotalk understood its audience and made relevant tweaks to unlock value.
Sometimes, small changes in the right direction can also lead to big impact.
With this context, do you think Astrotalk will pull off an yearly revenue of Rs. 2000 crores?
