๐ It was a big week for Ola Electric. The company just reached a valuation of $5 billion after a new funding round, thanks to the recent craze about electric vehicles. And as soon as the money hit the banks, Ola Electric started unveiling its big plans. Co-founder Bhavish Aggarwal posted a picture of a concept electric car that could put Tesla to shame. And that's not all. Ola Electric has immediately put the money it got to good use. It is setting up a new research and development centre in the UK to develop designs for EV two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers. It will invest $100 million in this R&D centre. Will this help the company best legacy automakers entering the EV space?
๐ Google is making a headway in the Indian telecom sector. After investing in Jio in 2020, it is now investing $1 billion in Airtel as well. It will buy a 1.28% stake for $700 million, and give another $300 million to scale Airtel's offerings by deploying its network solutions for the 5G drive in India. They could create an affordable smartphone like JioPhone Next. Is Google the ultimate winner in India's telecom war?
๐ Zomato is going through a major bad luck streak right now. Investors have been selling off its shares and the sell-off has caused it to lose out on its decacorn status (company worth over $10 billion). Meanwhile, its major rival Swiggy has managed to become a decacorn. But, Zomato's not just gonna stand down. It has acquired stake in UrbanPiper (19%) and AdOnMo (5%). UrbanPiper's software will help Zomato's restaurant partners fulfill orders faster whereas AdOnMo will help with customer acquisition. Zomato has also launched an NBFC which will extend credit to restaurants, delivery partners and its shareholders. Will this help it compete better with Swiggy?
