On June 8, 2026, LME aluminium traded at $3,594 per tonne. A year earlier, the same tonne cost roughly $2,480. That is a 44.89% price increase over twelve months, and global demand did not slow down for a single quarter of it.

According to a CRISIL report, this price rise could increase revenues for players in India’s wires and cables industry by ~30%, as manufacturers should be able to pass on the rise in prices of key raw materials.

Aluminium’s isn’t the kind of price story that gets reversed by a mild recession. According to Alcoa’s projections, global aluminium consumption is growing at a 2.3% CAGR through 2035, driven by EVs needing lighter frames, solar panels needing aluminium mounts, and power grids expanding faster than ever. The IEA confirms that clean energy transitions will structurally lift demand for decades.

The Axis Securities June 2026 sector report puts global primary aluminium demand at 74.3 million tonnes (MT) in 2025, rising toward 82 MT by 2030. It also forecasts a 1.2 MT primary deficit in 2026 in a market that was balanced just two years ago.

P.S. For all you Diet Coke lovers, (I don’t know what’s wrong with you. Originals’s way better), this aluminium shortage is also the reason Diet Coke production in India hit a speed bump. The shortage of the metal is making it difficult to package and sell the can exclusive beverage.

What makes this crunch unusual is what is not causing it. The earth hasn’t run out of bauxite. There is no smelting technology barrier. The shortage is almost entirely man-made: a product of trade policy, warfare, and the brutal physics of electricity.

Two Reasons the World Doesn’t Have Enough

The first is a ceiling China built for itself.

China produces roughly 60% of the world’s primary aluminium. Since 2017, Beijing has imposed a hard 45 MT annual ceiling on primary smelting capacity. It was a deliberate industrial policy designed to curb energy overconsumption and prevent rampant capacity addition. For years the cap felt theoretical. China reliably produced well below it. In 2025, production reached 44.38 MT and hit the ceiling.

This matters because it removes the single most important buffer the global market ever had. Whenever aluminium ran short, because of a war, a drought affecting hydro plants, an unexpected demand spike, China simply smelted more. That mechanism is structurally gone. Axis Securities projects China’s output plateauing at around 45.3 MT by 2030, a 0.4% CAGR in a market requiring 2% annual growth.

The second driver is war.

The Gulf Cooperation Council is a surprisingly large aluminium producer. The UAE, Bahrain, and Qatar together produced 6.16 MT in 2025, approximately 9% of global primary output. The region built this capacity specifically to monetise cheap natural gas. Smelters like Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) in Abu Dhabi and Alba in Bahrain became world-class operations. They were low-cost, export-oriented, and strategically placed at the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz.

In early 2026, conflict hit. Direct attacks struck EGA and Alba, and the Strait of Hormuz, the chokepoint through which virtually all GCC aluminium exports flow, was blockaded. Combined with the shutdown of South 32’s Mozambique smelter and disruptions in Iceland, Axis Securities estimates roughly 3.3 MT of global output was effectively removed from the market in 2026. The GCC’s forecast production drops from 6.16 MT in 2025 to just 3.4 MT in 2026.

ING’s commodities team warned in March 2026 that a severe disruption scenario could briefly push prices above $4,000/t. On June 2, aluminium touched $3,850. China has tried to plug the gap. May exports surged 16% year-on-year to 630,000 tonnes, one of the strongest monthly performances in years. It still wasn’t enough. The global deficit persists.

Indonesia: The Release Valve That Isn’t Quite Open

In the middle of all this, Indonesia has become the most closely watched supply story in commodities.

The archipelago sits on large bauxite reserves and has attracted Chinese-backed smelter projects across North Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and West Kalimantan. The total pipeline targets a nameplate capacity of 14.9 MT by 2030, which would make Indonesia one of the top producers on earth. Axis Securities estimates 1,230 ktpa of new Indonesian capacity coming online in 2026 alone.

But 14.9 MT is almost certainly a fantasy. Fastmarkets’ base case for Indonesian output by 2030 is 3.4–3.5 MT. The constraint isn’t capital, and it isn’t ore. It’s electricity.

Aluminium smelting consumes roughly 14-15 MWh per tonne of metal produced. Scaling to 14.9 MT would require approximately 24 GW of dedicated power capacity. Indonesia’s entire national grid in 2025 stood at 107.5 GW. Achieving the target would devour roughly 22% of the country’s total electricity capacity just for aluminium smelters.

There’s a longer-term trap buried here too. Almost every project in the pipeline runs on captive coal power. The EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which entered its definitive phase in 2026, will progressively impose costs of $150–$230/t on high-carbon aluminium entering European markets by 2028–2030. Indonesian coal-based metal will feel that headwind directly.

Indonesia’s state miner PT Inalum has already urged the government to impose a moratorium on new alumina and aluminium facility licenses, worried the sector is headed for a nickel-style overcapacity crash, where Indonesia’s aggressive expansion of Chinese-backed mining and smelter operations created a massive global nickel oversupply. The government has not yet acted. Projects are proceeding, and Indonesia’s production will likely grow meaningfully, from 0.82 MT in 2025 to perhaps 3.5 MT by 2030. But that is not a solution. It’s more of a temporary relief valve.

India: Well-Positioned, and About to Get Bigger

India is the world’s second-largest primary aluminium producer outside China, contributing roughly 6% of global primary supply. Output reached 4.28 MT in 2025. Axis Securities projects it climbing to 6.5 MT by 2030 (an 8.7% CAGR), faster than any other major producing nation.

Three companies drive almost all of it. Hindalco Industries, NALCO and Vedanta account for ~90% of India’s 4.6 MT capacity. Hindalco Industries (Aditya Birla Group) sits in the first quartile of the global cost curve at $1,500–$1,720/t integrated cost, its EBITDA per tonne reached $1,572 in 2025. Expansion plans include 180 ktpa of new capacity at Aditya Aluminium in Odisha by FY28 (Phase I) and 193 ktpa more by FY29 (Phase II). NALCO, the government-owned producer, is adding 500 ktpa at Angul, Odisha by 2030. Vedanta is building a greenfield 1,000 ktpa smelter at Dhenkanal, Odisha, commissioning in phases through 2029.

The strategic differentiator going forward is energy. India’s Big Four (Hindalco, NALCO, Vedanta, and BALCO) have collectively committed to a $5 billion investment in 20 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. As CBAM progressively taxes coal-heavy metal at European borders, green-certified Indian aluminium could command a meaningful premium, a trade route Indonesia’s coal-powered capacity cannot access.

The Takeaway

This crunch is, at its core, a story about where cheap, well-located supply used to come from, and what happens when it stops. Chinese smelters under a government cap. Gulf smelters under fire. Indonesian smelters starved of electricity. The world’s aluminium cost floor has permanently shifted from ~$1,600/t in 2014 to $2,053/t today, and Axis Securities believes prices will not retreat below $2,500/t again.

There’s a new force accelerating that shift. AI data centres are now outbidding aluminium smelters for baseload power, willing to pay $115/MWh against the $40/MWh threshold at which smelting stays viable. Every $10/MWh rise in electricity adds $125–$150/t to production costs.

The question for investors isn’t whether aluminium prices stay elevated. The structural case for that is solid. It’s which producers sit low on the cost curve, with clean enough energy credentials, to prosper in a market where the surplus years are firmly behind us.

Seven of the world’s most powerful private equity firms are in a bidding war. The prize? A 25% stake in Cloudnine Hospitals, India’s largest maternity and paediatric chain. KKR, TPG Capital, Warburg Pincus, Advent International, CVC Capital Partners, Permira, and domestic fund Kedaara Capital are all competing for a slice of a company that posted ₹2,000 crore in revenue and ₹300 crore in EBITDA in FY26, at a valuation of ₹10,000 crore. Allegro Capital is running the sale. Initial bids are due in the first week of July.

That’s not normal deal activity, but a signal about how comprehensively global capital has repositioned India’s healthcare sector within its investment hierarchy.

Private equity’s infatuation with Indian hospitals has deepened markedly since 2020. Between 2022 and 2024, India’s healthcare sector logged over $30 billion in total M&A and PE transactions. Hospitals alone attracted $4.96 billion in PE inflows, accounting for nearly 40% of all deal value, and in 2024 alone, that figure swelled to $6 billion, a 24% jump year-on-year. The deals have not been timid. Blackstone now holds roughly 80% of KIMS Kerala and 73% of Care Hospitals. Temasek holds around 59% of Manipal hospitals. In March 2026, Manipal filed for a $1.17 billion IPO. The ownership map of Indian healthcare is being comprehensively redrawn.

But what’s the prognosis on PEs investing in Indian hospitals? Let’s find out!

Before PE Arrived, There Were Doctors

For most of India’s post-independence history, hospitals were built and run by the doctors who practised in them. A senior cardiologist in Pune or a gynaecologist in Bengaluru would pool personal savings, take a bank loan, buy a plot, and build a facility around their clinical reputation and referral network. Quality depended entirely on the founding physician’s skills. Scale depended on how much more they could borrow, how many hours they could spare from patients, and how much administrative chaos they could tolerate. Most hospitals stayed small. Most stayed local.

The limitations were baked in. A doctor-promoter running a 50-bed facility in Coimbatore was simultaneously a clinician, HR manager, supply chain head, and real estate developer. Capital was the permanent bottleneck. Good medical outcomes did not automatically translate into institutional growth, and banks were reluctant to lend at scale to what were essentially single-founder businesses tied to one doctor’s reputation.

What broke the mold was Covid-19. The pandemic made two things undeniable, India’s healthcare capacity was dangerously insufficient, and hospitals, unlike retail or hospitality, maintained cash flows through economic shocks. PE funds took serious notice.

The Sahyadri Hospitals story is the clearest illustration of the switch. The Pune chain’s founders sold to Everstone in 2019 for ~₹1,000 crore. Within a year, Everstone exited, selling to Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan for ~₹2,500 crore. By 2025, Temasek-backed Manipal acquired the chain at ~₹6,400 crore. Three ownership changes in six years, each at dramatically higher valuations. That compounding, achieved through geographic expansion, operational standardization, brand building, and bed additions, is exactly what PE capital is engineered for. So while the doctor-promoter model solved for access, it was PE that solved for scale.

The Investment Case Is Hard to Argue With

The structural logic for investing in Indian hospitals is difficult to dismiss. The market reached $193 billion in 2025 and is projected to more than double to $364 billion by 2034 at a 7.3% CAGR. That trajectory is powered by constant undersupply. India has just 1.3 hospital beds per 1,000 people, against the WHO-recommended 3. This translates into a shortfall of 2.4 million beds. There’s no need to manufacture demand in this sector yet, there’s still sufficient organic demand waiting to be met.

Then there’s the insurance shift. Ayushman Bharat and parallel state schemes have dramatically expanded formal coverage. Rural insurance penetration reached 47.4% in 2025, actually outpacing urban levels. For hospitals, insured patients mean predictable, guaranteed payment streams that aren’t dependent on a family’s savings account. That change in revenue quality explains why investors are paying 20x to 30x EBITDA for quality hospital assets.

And then there’s medical tourism. India’s medical tourism market was valued at $8.35 billion in 2025 and is projected to nearly triple to $22.11 billion by 2031, growing at a 12.4% annual rate. The reason for this success? Procedures in India cost 60–80% less than OECD rates. A bypass surgery that runs $100,000 in the United States starts at $5,000 here. Over 5.07 lakh foreign patients arrived for medical treatment in 2024 alone, and the numbers are rising. For a PE-backed hospital chain, these are premium-paying, high-margin patients who bring foreign exchange directly into the revenue line.

The Question Nobody Wants to Answer

PE funds exist to generate returns, typically targeting a tripling of invested capital on exit. That imperative can sit very uneasily with the purpose of a hospital.

India’s out-of-pocket health expenditure, or what ordinary families pay directly from their own pockets, still accounts for roughly 37% of total health spending. Down from nearly 70% two decades ago, yes. But still high enough to make every serious illness a potential financial catastrophe. Around 400 million Indians remain without meaningful insurance. An estimated 7% of the population is pushed below the poverty line by medical costs each year. India’s overall insurance penetration sits at 3.7% of GDP. That’s roughly half the global average, and even insured patients find that reimbursements often fall short of what is actually billed.

The United States is the cautionary tale here. PE entered American healthcare aggressively through the 2000s and 2010s. Research consistently found that PE-owned hospitals charge higher prices, increase procedure volumes, and engage in more aggressive billing than their non-PE counterparts, with clinicians facing pressure to maximise “revenue per patient.” Debt-loaded acquisitions have led, in some cases, to rural service cuts and even hospital closures, leaving patients in medical deserts. The endpoint? Medical bills are the leading cause of personal bankruptcy in the US, accounting for 66.5% of all filings.

India isn’t there. But the vulnerabilities are structurally present. Hospital assets now trade at 20x–30x EBITDA, which means PE firms need sustained margin expansion to justify those entry prices on exit. When that pressure is applied inside a hospital, it tends to appear as higher room tariffs, upsold diagnostics, and bills that quietly creep beyond insurance caps. The middle-income patient without comprehensive coverage absorbs the difference.

The affordability question carries one more dimension that rarely surfaces in deal memos. India’s medical tourism proposition, with over $8 billion in annual foreign exchange, rests entirely on cost arbitrage with the developed world. If private hospital pricing drifts upward under return pressure, that advantage erodes. The patient who would have flown from Nairobi or Dhaka to Chennai will simply choose Bangkok instead. India’s medical tourism windfall does not survive in a world where Indian hospitals price like American ones.

The Takeaway

The Cloudnine bidding war is a genuine vote of confidence in Indian healthcare’s future. Seven global funds see real tailwinds in demographics, bed shortages, insurance expansion, a growing middle class, and a medical tourism industry still in its early innings. The capital will help Cloudnine expand its network, modernize facilities, and reach more patients. That is an optimistic reading, and it is not wrong.

The harder question is what gets optimized once the exit clock starts ticking. In a software company, that typically means cutting R&D or delaying hires. In a hospital, the answer doesn’t show up in a quarterly filing, but at the billing counter, at 2 AM, when someone’s family is deciding what they can and cannot afford.

This map shows the state of groundwater available in India. Based on this map, ~10-13% of India’s water resources are over exploited. This means that these regions are using their water resources faster than they are replenished, driving these regions to water shortages. India holds just 4% of the world’s freshwater resources but supports 18% of its population.

Looking at the state of India’s water scarcity, we’d think that development would be more careful about water use. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case. At least not as far as data centres and ethanol production are concerned.

On ethanol, our installed production capacity hit nearly 20 billion litres per year by November 2025. That’s a near-tenfold jump from a decade ago. The country hit its 20% blending target five years ahead of schedule. From April 2026, E20 is mandatory at every petrol pump in India. The programme has saved ₹1.44 lakh crore in foreign exchange that would otherwise have gone to crude oil importers.

On data centres, India added 440 MW of new capacity in 2025 alone. That’s a 160% year-on-year jump, pushing total operational stock past 1,700 MW. Microsoft committed $17.5 billion to India’s cloud and AI infrastructure, Amazon pledged $35 billion across its India businesses, and Google announced $15 billion for a gigawatt-scale campus in Andhra Pradesh. The sector is valued at $10 billion and could add 0.5-1% to GDP indirectly through productivity gains across banking, e-commerce, and AI services.

Both stories are genuinely impressive. A country building real industrial muscle, reducing dependence on foreign energy and foreign cloud infrastructure at the same time. But India’s data centres consumed roughly 150 billion litres of water in 2025, and ethanol’s water footprint, when you account for the crops that feed it, runs to thousands of litres for every single litre of fuel produced. As both sectors expand, so does their thirst.

India’s growth on global competitiveness looks good, but our water table does not.

Ethanol Catches Fire

The ethanol story has built over a decade, almost without drama. What started at a 1.53% blend in 2013–14 became mandatory at 20% at every petrol pump across India by April 2026, an achievement five years ahead of schedule. Production capacity grew from around 2 billion litres to nearly 20 billion litres over the same period. Over 245 lakh metric tonnes of crude oil have been substituted. The government is not stopping there.

In May 2026, the Bureau of Indian Standards notified fuel specifications for E22, E25, E27, and E30 blends, laying regulatory groundwork for blending well beyond 20%. Tests for E85 and E100 are already underway under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, with Indian Oil selling E100 at 183 retail outlets. Maruti Suzuki is preparing to launch India’s first mass-market flex-fuel vehicle. The direction is clear. E30 is the next step, E85 is the destination.

The economics make sense, especially after Strait of Hormuz tensions in early 2026 sharpened India’s energy security focus. Industry body GEMA estimates higher blending and flex-fuel vehicles could save India up to ₹2 lakh crore annually in foreign exchange against an oil import bill of ₹22 lakh crore. Current E20 demand runs at around 10.5–11 billion litres per year. Move to E30, and demand rises roughly 50%. Move to E85, and you need a multiple. Every extra litre of ethanol means more crops, more land, and above all, more water.

Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra has stated that producing one litre of ethanol from rice requires roughly 10,790 litres of water across the full cultivation cycle. Sugarcane requires around 3,630 litres per litre; maize, about 4,670. The grain ethanol industry pushes back, correctly noting that modern distilleries use only 3–5 litres of process water per litre in-plant. Technically valid, practically meaningless: the crops draw their water from irrigation and aquifers long before they reach a distillery. The water is still gone.

India allocated 52 lakh tonnes of rice specifically for ethanol in 2024–25. The 2025–26 target is 90 lakh tonnes. To enable this shift, the government is reducing the share of broken rice distributed through the Public Distribution System from 25% to 10%, diverting the balance to distilleries. This is not just a water trade-off. It is a water-and-food trade-off.

The geography makes it worse. India’s 1,822 crore litre ethanol capacity is concentrated in already water-stressed states. Maharashtra holds 396 crore litres of that capacity, even as Vidarbha and Marathwada face drinking water shortages each summer. Ethanol plants in Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka draw from groundwater reserves already classified as critically depleted. The distilleries are not being built where water is available. They are being built where the crops are, in places that cannot afford to lose another drop.

Data Centre of Attraction

If ethanol’s water problem is rooted in agriculture, the data centre’s is hidden in plain sight, tucked inside cooling towers running 24 hours a day.

A single 100-MW facility consumes roughly 2 million litres of water per day. India’s total operational capacity has crossed 1,520 MW, expected to hit 1.7–2 GW by end-2026 and 4–5 GW by 2030, with AI-accelerated scenarios pushing toward 8–9 GW. Amazon, Microsoft, and Google together committed over $67 billion to India in late 2025. The Union Budget 2026–27 added a tax holiday through 2047 for eligible foreign cloud providers using Indian infrastructure, further sweetening an already generous deal.

India already generates 20% of global data while hosting just 3% of global capacity. Every bank transfer, UPI payment, streaming session, and AI inference call runs through these facilities. The gap between data generated and infrastructure hosted is its own argument for expansion. But the water cost is not abstract. India’s data centres consumed 150 billion litres in 2025 and that figure is projected to more than double to 358 billion litres by 2030, and that is the base case.

The location problem mirrors ethanol’s. Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru account for the bulk of capacity, while already facing acute water stress. Hyderabad faces a projected deficit of 870 million litres per day by 2027, yet Amazon is expanding there. Bengaluru’s data centres alone consume over 26 million litres annually, even after the city emerged from what locals described as its worst water crisis in five centuries. An S&P Global study forecasts that 60–80% of India’s data centres could face high water stress within this decade.

When Google withdrew its $1 billion data centre proposal in Indianapolis in September 2025 after local opposition over water and energy demands, it was a signal. American communities are pushing back. India, by contrast, is moving in the opposite direction, and cutting taxes, reducing friction, and welcoming every project. Which is fine. Right up until the water runs out.

Saving Water

Is India doing anything about this?

Partially. Imperfectly. Far too slowly.

The government is not blind to the crisis. Jal Shakti Abhiyan, Atal Bhujal Yojana, and Jal Jeevan Mission address water supply and groundwater management. The World Water Day Conclave 2026 raised water circularity as a national priority. A National Water Data Policy was issued in 2026. The Central Ground Water Board reports that groundwater recharge improved from 432 to 448.52 billion cubic metres between 2017 and 2025. Progress exists.

But there is a gap between macro water policy and the industries actually drawing the water.

For data centres, there is no mandatory requirement to disclose water consumption. Environmental clearances do not require operators to declare operational water use, as Mongabay-India confirmed when it accessed the clearance documents for the Vizag Mega Data Centre Park, which were entirely silent on the matter. India offers import duty incentives for data centres with power usage efficiency below 1.4, a nudge for energy efficiency with no water equivalent. California is currently legislating mandatory annual water use reporting for every data centre. India is not.

Big Tech offers pledges. Microsoft and Amazon have both committed to becoming “water positive” by 2030. But as experts note, “replenishment” typically means funding conservation projects in different regions. So, a facility consuming millions of litres in water-scarce Mumbai can “offset” it by funding rainwater harvesting in a wetter state. For the sustainability report, the math works. For residents competing for Mumbai’s municipal supply, it is cold comfort.

On ethanol, NITI Aayog’s roadmap recommends shifting to less water-intensive crops like maize. That’s directionally correct, but the same government simultaneously targets 90 lakh tonnes of rice, the most water-intensive feedstock, for ethanol in 2025–26. No regulation requires new ethanol plants to avoid groundwater-stressed districts. The Central Ground Water Authority has been repeatedly criticised for inadequate enforcement and weak transparency. Policy recommends water efficiency; operational decisions routinely do the opposite.

The pattern is consistent. There are no binding mechanisms that force industry to account for water even when it builds, not just when it depletes. The industries get the approvals, the tax breaks, and the headline investments. When the literal water dues come, the natural resources pay the toll.

The Takeaway

India is building ethanol capacity toward E30 and beyond, and data centre capacity toward 5 GW by 2030. It supports 18% of the world’s population on 4% of its freshwater. By 2030, demand is projected to be twice the available supply. That’s a gap NITI Aayog warns could shave 6% off India’s GDP. NASA’s GRACE satellites show that water tables in northwestern India are sinking by 4 centimetres every year.

None of this means India should abandon either programme. Reducing oil imports is a genuine national security argument, one that the Strait of Hormuz crisis of 2026 made viscerally obvious. Digital infrastructure is non-negotiable for economic growth. But “legitimate purpose” has never been a sufficient reason to ignore a resource constraint. The point of industrial policy is to make trade-offs visible and make choices, not to declare two goals national priorities and pretend the constraints do not exist.

Right now, ethanol’s water costs are borne by farmers in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and UP, whose wells are getting harder to draw from each season. Data centres’ water costs are invisible, absorbed by municipalities whose water tables are already in deficit, showing up only when summer shortages bite and no one traces the cause back to the cooling tower down the road.

The responsible version of this story is not “ethanol or data centres.” It is, “if we are going to build both, we need to count the water, set the limits, and stop letting industries that consume a scarce public resource treat it as a free input”.

That is a harder story to put on a scorecard. It is also the only one that will still make sense ten years from now.

Apollo Global Management would arrange the financing. Everyone involved gets a nice payday. AI advances. Story over.

Except the story is not as clean as it seems. Not for Michael Burry at least.

That’s Italian slang for “fake.” Used most memorably in Donnie Brasco, it describes something that looks real, feels real, but is fundamentally an illusion. On X, Burry responded to CNBC’s Jim Cramer defending Nvidia with the following: “It is all Fugazi. How to make tens of $billions worth of NVDA GPUs disappear from balance sheets in 8-12 byzantine steps.”

Now many companies make many deals, and many bear investors will have a negative opinion on them. But what makes this deal and its accusation worthwhile are the potential victims. The old pensioners of the USA.

Let’s see what’s going on.

The Deal Between Nvidia and xAI

The deal took place between famed chipmaker Nvidia, and Elon Musk’s xAI, which is an AI company that operates as an AI division under SpaceX. Now, the companies involved in this deal aren’t the problem. It’s the financing and legal structuring that makes things complicated.

On January 7, 2026, Apollo announced that it had led a $3.5 billion financing package for an entity called Valor Compute Infrastructure L.P. (VCI). VCI is a specialized investment fund managed by operational growth firm Valor Equity Partners. Established in 2026, VCI was created to acquire, own, and lease massive-scale AI hardware. VCI, in turn, used that capital, plus $1.9 billion of equity anchored by Nvidia itself, to acquire over 100,000 Nvidia GB200 GPUs for a combined $5.4 billion. Those GPUs were then leased to a subsidiary of xAI Corp under a five-year triple net lease.

The purpose: to power xAI’s second data center and train Grok, which Nvidia noted has shown “strong performance across benchmarks.” Nvidia booked the full $5.4 billion as completed-sale revenue. xAI got access to one of the most powerful compute clusters anywhere in the world.

Apollo, which manages approximately $908 billion in assets, described the transaction as a “hallmark, downside-protected investment in the AI infrastructure space.” Valor’s CEO Antonio Gracias called VCI an opportunity to invest in “critical AI compute infrastructure with quarterly cash distributions and upside through ownership of the compute assets.”

Big number. Big deal. Big future for AI. And yet.

This is also the same Nvidia whose stock trades at a price-to-earnings multiple that assumes it will dominate global AI infrastructure for the next decade without a single serious challenger materializing. It is not a stock priced for a Cisco moment. Which is exactly what Burry thinks is coming.

The Ownership Problem

Here is what nobody put in the headline: xAI doesn’t own any of those chips.

The legal title to all 100,000-plus GB200 GPUs sits with VCI, a shell special purpose vehicle with no operating business, no independent revenue, and no reason to exist except to hold the chips on paper. xAI only leases them. None of the GPUs, and none of the debt used to buy them, appear anywhere on xAI’s balance sheet.

This matters more than it sounds. xAI folded into SpaceX in February 2026, and SpaceX subsequently filed its IPO prospectus with the SEC in May 2026, targeting a valuation between $1.75 trillion and $2 trillion, which could be the largest public debut in history. The world’s most anticipated IPO is of a company whose entire AI division leases, rather than owns, its core AI computing infrastructure.

Now comes the financing layers. Apollo arranged $3.5 billion in debt, secured against those GPUs. It then packaged that debt into securities. And here is the part Burry flagged most loudly: Apollo sold those securities to Athene, its own insurance subsidiary. Apollo structured the deal, and then sold the risk to itself. Or more accurately, to the balance sheet that American retirees fill with their annuity premiums.

Something worth noting here is that Valor Equity Partners is not some fly-by-night operation. It manages roughly $55 billion in assets as of December 2025 and has a long history with Elon Musk’s companies. But VCI, the specific vehicle at the centre of this deal, is a new fund created for this transaction, with no prior operating track record, no diversified revenue base, and a single concentrated bet on xAI’s ability to generate returns from its AI compute. The entire structure rests on one question: does Grok make enough money to service a five-year GPU lease?

As if this one existential question isn’t bad enough, things get more complicated when we look at the origins of Athene.

What The Fugazi?

Athene is the company Apollo sold its debt securities to. Athene is also how ordinary people’s retirement savings end up in extraordinary places.

When Americans buy annuities from Athene, handing over lump sums in exchange for guaranteed retirement income, that capital becomes Athene’s investable float. Athene deploys it into assets. In this case: AI infrastructure debt secured by Nvidia GPUs held inside a Valor shell vehicle, leased to a subsidiary of a company planning the biggest IPO in stock market history.

Burry titled his diagram “The Retiree/Apollo/Nvidia/Bermuda/AMAPS/xAI Pipeline.” The name tells you everything about who sits where in this chain. He flagged four numbers inside Athene’s structure that he argues should alarm any serious investor.

First: $74.2 billion in total reserves. Second: $217 billion in assets shifted to a Bermuda-based captive insurer, sitting outside normal US state regulatory oversight. Third: $103 billion, or 34.7% of those assets, classified as Level 3, or illiquid, unobservable, valued by internal model rather than any real market price. And fourth: the entire structure runs at approximately 16x leverage.

The pipeline, as Burry maps it, runs like this. Nvidia records a clean $5.4 billion sale. xAI secures $5.4 billion in compute capacity with nothing on its books. Apollo earns fees across origination, structuring, distribution, and servicing. And American retirees, who signed up to receive a fixed monthly cheque in their old age, sit at the very bottom of a 16x leveraged structure of illiquid assets they cannot independently price, unknowingly carrying the credit risk on a GPU lease tied to the success of Elon Musk’s AI model.

That is why Burry calls it fugazi. Not necessarily fraudulent. Not necessarily illegal. But fake, in the sense that Nvidia’s $5.4 billion revenue appears clean precisely because twelve clever financial steps have obscured where the actual risk lives. The chips are real. The revenue is real. The risk, though, has been relocated somewhere quieter.

The Takeaway

Burry’s wider warning is a historical one. He keeps returning to Cisco in 1999, the undisputed infrastructure company of the internet era, with dominant hardware, real revenues, and universal analyst admiration. Its stock fell more than 80% from its peak. He believes Nvidia’s position rhymes with that story: genuinely dominant product, but revenue increasingly dependent on structured finance to keep the headline numbers growing.

The S&P 500’s Shiller CAPE (Cyclically Adjusted Price-to-Earnings) ratio sat at roughly 41.6 in May 2026. This metric, developed by Nobel laureate Robert Shiller, divides the index’s current price by the average of its inflation-adjusted earnings over the past 10 years. At over 40, the market is trading at a significant premium compared to its 20th-century benchmarks. It’s also the second-highest reading in over 140 years of US market data, just below the dot-com peak of 44.2 hit in December 1999.

Nvidia has not commented on Burry’s analysis. Apollo has not publicly addressed the specific Athene linkage. VCI is a private fund, with no disclosure obligation.

The deal may work out perfectly. xAI may generate more than enough AI revenue to service every lease payment. Athene’s Bermuda assets may be entirely stable. Apollo’s $40 billion-plus deployed into next-generation infrastructure since 2022 may prove out exactly as planned. Someone, after all, has to finance the trillions of dollars the world’s data centres will need in this decade.

But Burry’s point isn’t really about whether this particular deal fails. It’s about the possibility that when the biggest beneficiary of the AI boom runs its business through enough financing layers that the downside becomes invisible butthe risk remains. It’s just been pushed under enough layers to move legally into the retirement accounts of people who were told they were buying safety. People who don’t really have any way to know that the risk is cleverly hidden, not gone.

That’s the fugazi.

Imagine opening a government notice that reads, “We plan to release 32 million infected mosquitoes into your neighborhood.” The rational response, the human response, would be to panic, call someone, hang up, panic again.

That’s essentially the headline coming out of Florida right now. Google’s life sciences subsidiary, Verily, has formally asked the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for an Experimental Use Permit to release up to 32 million specially treated male mosquitoes across California and Florida over two years. Under the proposed plan, up to 16 million mosquitoes would land in Florida in Year 1, and another 16 million in California in Year 2. The EPA opened public comments through June 5, 2026, with a final decision to follow.

The idea, as strange, counterintuitive, or maybe even as alarming as it sounds, is to fight mosquitoes with mosquitoes.

What’s Going On?

Mosquitoes are the deadliest animals in human history. One species alone (the Aedes aegypti) is responsible for an outsized share of that carnage, transmitting dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever to hundreds of millions of people each year. In the US, Debug is also targeting Culex quinquefasciatus, the vector behind West Nile virus and St. Louis encephalitis, both increasingly active across American states. Globally, mosquito-borne diseases cost an estimated $12 billion per year. Climate change is widening the geographic range of Aedes aegypti into new latitudes and altitudes. The problem is not static.

The Debug approach is extremely simple in theory. Since 2016, Google scientists and engineers have been working on one core idea: release male mosquitoes infected with a naturally occurring bacterium called Wolbachia. Male mosquitoes can’t bite. Their anatomy simply doesn’t allow it. When they mate with wild females, Wolbachia prevents the eggs from hatching. Release enough “good bugs,” maintain the program over months, and the wild population collapses, without a drop of insecticide.

Behind the biology is a formidable industrial operation. Debug combines software engineers, robotics specialists, AI systems, and mosquito biologists who have built automated mosquito factories capable of producing millions of insects weekly. Computer vision sorts males from females with precision; robots manage breeding, incubation, and field deployment. The EPA is reviewing Verily’s application under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act, treating it with the same seriousness one would apply to a new class of pesticide. Which, biologically, it is.

What Exactly Is Project Debug?

The Sterile Insect Technique has been around since the 1950s and is already used successfully against screwworms, fruit flies, and codling moths. Debug’s contribution is industrializing it for mosquitoes, at a speed and scale no one has attempted before.

In 2017, Verily trialed the release of 20 million mosquitoes in Fresno County, California to build the scientific case for broader rollout. A year later, it partnered with Singapore’s National Environment Agency on what became ‘Project Wolbachia.’ The results have since become the program’s most compelling advertisement. Today, more than 10 million male Wolbachia mosquitoes are released weekly in Singapore alone. Rigorous NEA trials documented 80-90% suppression of the Aedes aegypti population and more than 70% reduction in dengue cases within six to twelve months of release.

Debug has since made its technology available in the British Virgin Islands, received a permit to release mosquitoes in Hawaii in April 2026, and has now released over one billion mosquitoes across four continents. The EPA notes Google’s US proposal could be of “regional and national significance.” Debug Project lead Linus Upson told the Financial Times: “We could make Singapore the first dengue-free country in the tropics.” Florida is next. But there is a far larger problem waiting much further east.

What About India?

Asia accounts for 70% of the global dengue burden. India, with its tropical climate, dense cities, sprawling periurban settlements, and chronically underfunded vector control programmes, sits right at the centre of it.

On paper, India’s fight against malaria looks like a genuine public health victory. Cases and deaths have fallen 80% since 2015, India exited the WHO’s ‘high burden to high impact’ group in 2024, and confirmed cases dropped from 1.08 million in 2016 to 255,500 in 2024. That’s a 76% decline. The government has a stated target of malaria elimination by 2030.

But the fine print complicates that story. The World Malaria Report 2025 estimates 2 million malaria cases in India in 2023, against an official count of just 220,000. That is a nine-fold gap. Underreporting in India’s public health data is not a footnote, it is structural. (Remember the COVID-19 casualties?) States like Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and West Bengal bear a disproportionate share of India’s malaria burden, often with the least surveillance capacity to capture it accurately. Meanwhile, globally, malaria is rising again: 282 million cases and 610,000 deaths in 2024, driven by drug-resistant parasites and insecticide-resistant mosquitoes.

Dengue is India’s more immediate and visible crisis. India officially recorded 233,519 dengue cases and 297 deaths in 2024, per NCVBDC data. Those official tallies, as always, are a fraction of reality. A systematic analysis put India’s true annual dengue caseload at 5.78 million. That’s 282 times the officially reported number. Researchers modeling dengue trends have projected over 300,000 officially reported cases and 533 deaths for India in 2026 alone, and that number represents only what survives through surveillance.

The economic damage is not abstract. A 2023-24 city-wide dengue cohort study in South India found hospitalized patients paid a median INR ₹16,827 in direct medical costs per episode, before lost wages or caregiver days enter the picture. Extrapolated across tens of millions of actual annual cases, the national dengue bill runs into several billion dollars. Malaria’s toll is similarly punishing. Each episode costs Indian households 2-4 days of lost productivity, with out-of-pocket treatment averaging $2.67 per infection, for working adults in Odisha or Jharkhand, that’s not a statistic, it’s a debt cycle. A 2024 global analysis in Science of the Total Environment put the average annual economic cost of Aedes mosquito-borne diseases at $3.1 billion worldwide, and explicitly flags that as a significant undercount, since most lost earnings in low-income countries go unrecorded.

This is a recurring productivity tax, levied disproportionately on those least able to absorb it.

The Takeaway

Debug’s expanded Singapore facility is explicitly designed to develop programs for countries in Southeast Asia with larger populations, building customized, cost-per-person protected targets for regional deployment and actively working to make the technology more affordable at scale. The science is sound. The precedent is encouraging. The demand, as India’s numbers make brutally clear, is immense.

What is missing is a regulatory pathway built for this kind of intervention. India’s framework for novel pest control is not designed for programs at this scale, and the political sensitivity around any biotech intervention, particularly one backed by a US tech company, would be considerable. What India would also need is a clear champion inside the government: a ministry or department willing to run a pilot in a high-burden district, gather data, and push through the regulatory thicket.

And unlike Florida and California’s 32 million mosquitoes over two years, India would need billions released continuously, across thousands of cities and rural clusters, in an ecosystem nothing like Singapore’s controlled island environment.

But the alternative is familiar. Spray insecticides on mosquitoes growing steadily more resistant to them, continue tallying hospital days and lost wages, and rely on a surveillance system that undercounts by a factor of nine.

The mosquito has outlasted every weapon humanity has thrown at it for millennia. Google wants to try bacteria, AI, and a billion bugs. For a country like India, the cost of sitting on the sidelines, waiting for someone else to work out the playbook, may be far higher than it looks.

₹71,000 crore.

That’s how much India has pumped into its electric vehicle ambitions since 2015, through FAME I, FAME II, the PM E-DRIVE scheme, PLI programmes, and dozens of state-level incentive packages designed to widen EV adoption before the market could do it on its own. That is a decade-long bet on cleaner roads, reduced dependence on imported fuel, and a manufacturing future built around batteries rather than petrol.

And it was working. In FY26, India’s passenger EV segment had its best year on record. Sales surged 84% to nearly 2,00,000 units across the country. Tata Motors dominated the category, Mahindra made meaningful gains, and Maruti Suzuki finally showed up with intent. EVs made up 4.3% of all passenger vehicle sales nationally. That’s modest, but atleast growing steadily in the right direction.

Then the states changed their minds.

Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Rajasthan, four of India’s biggest EV markets, withdrew their purchase subsidies after hitting self-imposed sales caps. Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh went a step further, adding fresh road taxes on electric cars. Together, these moves are pushing up on-road prices at a moment when India can least afford to slow the EV momentum it has spent a decade building.

Let’s see what’s going on.

The Subsidy Exits

Each state had built expiry dates into its EV policy from the start. Maharashtra ran a 10% subsidy on the first 10,000 electric cars under its 2025 policy. Uttar Pradesh offered a 15% subsidy, capped at ₹1 lakh, for up to 25,000 vehicles since 2022. By March 2026, UP’s transport department had received 24,952 applications and disbursed ₹173 crore for 18,359 vehicles, and dealers on the ground confirmed that new customers were no longer eligible. The state declined to comment on whether the scheme would be extended. Tamil Nadu provided ₹10,000 per kWh plus ₹1.5 lakh for 3,000 cars annually since 2023. Rajasthan gave direct subsidies of ₹30,000–50,000 for the first 1,000 personal and commercial EVs each. All four have since closed the window.

The catch: these “targets” were about exhausting a subsidy budget, not building a self-sustaining market.

These four states together drove over 80,000 EV car sales in FY26, or more than a third of the 2,00,000 units sold nationally. Part of that surge was a last-minute buyer rush, as consumers scrambled to lock in incentives before the windows closed, consuming available funds faster than planned. Losing that support is more than a minor policy tweak. It is a structural shift in the cost of going electric across India’s most active EV markets.

Now Add a Road Tax

If the subsidy exit is one problem, a fresh road tax is the other.

Karnataka was once India’s self-styled EV capital. Home to a large base of Bengaluru’s tech-savvy early adopters and a state that had aggressively zeroed out EV taxes. That status took a direct hit on April 1, 2026. Under the Karnataka Motor Vehicles Taxation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, EVs now face a tiered lifetime road tax. 5% for cars priced up to ₹10 lakh, 8% for ₹10–25 lakh, and 10% above ₹25 lakh. The state’s transport department had reportedly missed its 2025–26 revenue target by 14%, a shortfall of roughly ₹2,100 crore, and pointed to the high volume of tax-exempt EVs as a major reason.

The new levy is expected to generate ₹250–259 crore annually for the state. But for buyers, the math stings. A Tata Nexon EV or Mahindra XUV400 (both in the ₹10–25 lakh range), will now cost ₹1.2–1.6 lakh more on-road in Bengaluru. Entry-level EVs face a ₹35,000–50,000 price hike.

And there is compounding problem too. EVs in India already cost ₹2–4 lakh more than equivalent petrol cars. Layering a road tax over a disappearing subsidy is a double hit on the single factor that determines whether a middle-class Indian buyer picks an EV or doesn’t, and that’s the sticker price on day one.

Delhi, to its credit, read the situation differently. Its draft EV policy proposes a 100% road tax waiver for electric cars priced up to ₹30 lakh, valid until March 2030. But Delhi is currently the exception, not the direction the country appears to be heading.

The China Playbook

To understand why India’s timing is off, look at what China got right.

China dominates global EV sales. BYD ships more electric vehicles than most national automakers sell cars of any kind. But that didn’t happen through market forces alone. Beyond purchase subsidies, China maintained a complete purchase tax exemption for EVs — worth up to 30,000 yuan (~₹3.5 lakh) per vehicle through 2025. BYD alone received 12.47 billion yuan ($1.8 billion) in government operational subsidies in 2025. That’s a 19.8% jump from the year before.

Crucially, Beijing paired demand-side incentives with decades of investment in lithium processing, battery manufacturing, and EV components. This gave Chinese OEMs the cost base to stay competitive even as buyer incentives tapered. India’s manufacturing ecosystem, by contrast, is still early-stage. Without that supply-side depth, Indian EV makers are far more reliant on demand-side support to remain affordable to buyers.

China is only expected to phase out its EV subsidy scheme around 2027, and only after EVs have achieved genuine cost parity with petrol cars. China’s EV share went from one in eight new cars in 2021 to one in four by 2022, and kept climbing as prices fell. The state stepped back only once the market could sustain itself.

India is removing the training wheels before the rider has learned to balance.

The Takeaway

Here is the bigger picture. India imports roughly 89% of its crude oil and spends over ₹18 lakh crore annually on petroleum imports, at nearly 3% of GDP. A large-scale shift to EVs is among the most credible long-term ways to trim that bill. The EV story was never purely about clean air. It was also about energy security, and every petrol car that stays on the road is a small vote against that goal.

But India’s car buyers are acutely price-sensitive. In a market where most new cars are sold below ₹15 lakh, a ₹1-2 lakh swing in on-road price is the difference between a sale and a walkout. The entire subsidy architecture existed to bridge that gap. Pull it before the market is ready, and the rational buyer does the math and returns to petrol.

The industry has been unambiguous about the stakes. Amit Bhatt, India MD at the International Council on Clean Transportation, warned that rising upfront costs could set back the green transition in mobility and called for stronger supply-side regulations like CAFE standards rather than just cutting demand support. Anurag Mehrotra, MD of JSW MG Motor India, was direct: state-level incentives are a critical driver of EV adoption, and sustained state support will be vital to achieving the government’s 30% EV penetration target by 2030. Tata Motors echoed the point: customer-centric state incentives are equally vital for mainstreaming of EVs.

India’s EV penetration sits at 4.3%. The government’s target is 30% by 2030. That gap doesn’t close without sustained support. With the central PM E-DRIVE scheme’s ₹10,900 crore outlay also set to expire in March 2026, India’s EV push risks losing its momentum precisely when it needs it most.

The long-term bet on EVs still makes sense. The import savings, the air quality gains, the manufacturing potential. It all adds up. But treating EVs as a new tax base the moment the segment shows early promise is precisely how you stall a transition that hasn’t found its own footing yet. The government at the centre and in the states, needs to borrow one page from Beijing’s playbook. Patience. Subsidies aren’t the problem. Pulling them before the market is ready is.

You’ve probably seen the notification. Your phone pings with a weather update and there’ warning that it might feel hotter than what’s shown. It’s a bit like the text on your car’s rearview mirror: objects may be closer than they appear. Except here it’s heat, not distance, and the warning is getting harder to ignore.

Now picture yourself inside that car, engine running, AC barely keeping up, trapped in traffic going nowhere. If you’ve driven through Bengaluru, Delhi, or Kolkata in the last few weeks, you don’t need to imagine. You’ve lived it. But take a moment, and look left, then look right. Most cars around you have exactly one person in them. The driver. The other three seats are empty. A few of these cars might even be headed for the same destination, but in different cars, and nobody is sharing.

We know that India clearly doesn’t have a shortage of vehicles. If anything, we have a surplus of unused seats. And that gap is making everything worse. The heat, the traffic, the air. Filling this gap of seats through carpooling could be a solution to these problems.

A C-DEP white paper recommends creating a dedicated legal category called “Carpooling Intermediaries” under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Maharashtra’s Draft Aggregator and Carpooling Rules, 2025 has already done this at the state level. Even the Economic Survey of 2024-25 points out that adapting carpooling on a large scale could reduce the number of vehicle trips per day by 7,80,000. This, in turn, would also save around 380 million litres of fuel annually.

So, is carpooling the fix? If so, why isn’t it more widely accepted? Let’s find out!

A Country on Fire

On April 27, 2026, something with no modern precedent happened. Every single one of the world’s top 50 hottest cities, as tracked by AQI.in, was in India. Not one entry from the Middle East. Not one from sub-Saharan Africa. India occupied the entire list, rank 1 to rank 50, with an average peak temperature of 44.7°C across all 50 cities. By May 22, things escalated further. 97 of the world’s 100 hottest cities were Indian, with Balangir in Odisha hitting 48°C and Brahmapuri in Maharashtra recording 47.2°C.

The heat isn’t random. It’s the accumulated product of how India moves. According to a February 2026 white paper by the Centre for Digital Economy Policy Research (C-DEP), road transport accounted for approximately 92% of India’s total transport energy demand in 2021, and nearly 95% of that is met by petrol and diesel. The entire transport sector itself consumes 3.6 million tonnes of oil equivalent (MTOE) of natural gas and 43.4 MTOE of oil products each year, accounting for 12.5 percent of the country’s total energy consumption. The average Indian private car emits 121.3 grams of CO₂ per kilometre. That’s 28% more than the European Union’s 2021 target of 95 g/km. These emissions don’t just pollute; they trap heat at the surface through the greenhouse effect, feeding the very conditions that push that “feels hotter” notification onto your screen every morning.

The vehicle count has only amplified the problem. India had 142 million registered vehicles in 2011. By 2025, that number had reached nearly 389 million, almost tripling in 14 years, as rising incomes and cheaper credit turned car ownership from aspiration to expectation.

Over the same period, India’s urban population grew 38%, from 377 million to 542 million, pushing more of those vehicles onto roads that were never designed for them.

The result? Indian cities are grinding to a halt. Turns out, more vehicles don’t mean better transportation. According to the TomTom Traffic Index 2023, Bengaluru is one of the world’s most congested city, where drivers spend 168 hours a year stuck in traffic, moving at a peak-hour average of just 16.6 km/h. Kolkata follows with a similarly grim 17 km/h. A joint study by the Transport Corporation of India and IIM Calcutta puts the total cost of this congestion through lost productivity, wasted fuel, excess emissions at over ₹1.4 lakh crore annually, almost 0.5% of GDP. And of the 30 most polluted cities in the world, 19 are Indian.

The Seat Nobody’s Sitting In

Most of this damage comes from cars that are nearly empty.

The average occupancy of private cars in India is between 1.2 and 1.5 persons per vehicle. On the Delhi–Gurgaon Expressway alone, which carries 300,000 vehicles daily, that means over 750,000 seats go to waste every single day. If just 20% of those drivers offered one shared seat, roughly 60,000 fewer vehicles would need to be on that road. One corridor. One behavioral shift. 60,000 cars gone.

Let’s look at some emissions math. Raise average vehicle occupancy from 1.5 to 2.5 persons (entirely achievable through carpooling) and CO₂ emissions per passenger-kilometre fall by up to 22%. At scale, the Economic Survey 2024-25 estimated carpooling could eliminate 7,80,000 vehicle trips per day, save 380 million litres of fuel annually, and prevent 0.87 million tonnes of CO₂ from entering the atmosphere each year or the equivalent to the carbon absorbed by 40 million trees.

This isn’t theory. In France, BlaBlaCar’s users saved 1.6 million tonnes of CO₂ in 2022 alone. In the UK, Liftshare helped employers eliminate 402 million kilometres of commuter travel, avoiding roughly 300,000 tonnes of carbon. India already has the infrastructure to replicate this, we have our smartphones, expressways, digital payments. The missing piece is willingness and a little policy nudge.

The money case is hard to dismiss too. A dataset of 811,804 confirmed inter-city carpooling trips in Maharashtra in 2024 shows the average seat cost was just over ₹2/km. A solo driver’s actual cost, accounting for fuel, tolls, depreciation, maintenance, and insurance, comes to ₹14–15/km. That’s a gap too large to ignore. A 120 km trip costing ₹1,800 solo becomes ₹360 per person in a full car. Maharashtra already recorded over 1.9 million carpooling passengers in 2024. The demand exists.

Clearing the Way

The biggest obstacle to carpooling in India isn’t technology or demand. It’s a regulatory grey zone.

Right now, carpooling platforms are often treated like commercial ride-hailing aggregators like Ola, Uber, etc., even though they operate on a fundamentally different model. Carpooling is non-commercial and cost-sharing. Nobody profits. But that distinction hasn’t been codified at the national level, which creates legal risk for platforms, discourages new entrants, and pushes informal arrangements entirely off-platform.

As we mentioned in the intro, the C-DEP white paper recommends creating a dedicated legal category called “Carpooling Intermediaries” under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Maharashtra’s Draft Aggregator and Carpooling Rules, 2025 has already done this at the state level. The central government needs to follow. Alongside this, platforms should be allowed to operate under a single national registration, rather than fighting through 28 state-level compliance requirements. Carpooling, by nature, crosses state borders.

The report also recommends allowing 100% cost recovery for driver-users. Meaning fuel, tolls, depreciation, maintenance, and insurance can all be shared, as long as no profit is made. Currently, ambiguity around this threshold deters participation. And on safety, the recommendations are practical rather than bureaucratic: Aadhaar-based driver verification through a centralised API, a women-only matching option, live trip-sharing with trusted contacts, and a 24/7 multilingual helpline. No physical infrastructure required. No new intermediaries.

Then there’s a nudge that costs almost nothing. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways could print a single line on every vehicle Registration Certificate, Driving Licence, and at NHAI toll plazas. “Carpooling is better for the environment”. It requires a minor update to an existing printing cycle. No campaign budget, no new programme. Just a message placed where every driver already looks.

The Takeaway

India’s roads need fewer, and fuller vehicles.

Every car stuck in that traffic jam was going somewhere anyway. Every empty seat is a choice, not a constraint. The emissions it creates, the congestion it adds, the heat it contributes, these are costs distributed across everyone and borne individually by no one. That’s precisely the kind of problem that a well-placed nudge, a clean policy, and a shared ride can actually solve.

Next time your phone warns you it feels hotter than the thermometer says, look at the car you’re in and the ones next to you. Are they running as many passengers as can fit in a vehicle with half as many wheels? Probably so. And now you know how big a problem it is.

₹28,540 crore (~$3 billion).

That’s how much India could have saved every year in foreign exchange if the Directorate General of Trade Remedies’s (DGTR) recommendation was heard. The recommendation was to implement anti-dumping duties on 56 products recommended by the DGTR. Instead, our domestic industry had to bear annual economic losses worth ₹11,938 crore due to the non-implementation of the duty.

So, India’s trade referee, the DGTR, investigates a case, gathers evidence, concludes that a foreign exporter is illegally flooding our markets with underpriced goods, and recommends a corrective duty. The case is airtight. So airtight, in fact, that not a single DGTR recommendation has ever been overturned at the WTO. Then the file lands on the Finance Ministry’s desk, and nothing happens.

We complain constantly about India’s import bill. Programs like Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India were built precisely to reduce our dependence on foreign supply chains. Unfortunately though, when the legal machinery designed to protect domestic manufacturers actually produces a verdict, the government often ignores it. Despire said machinery surviving global scrutiny. The gap between industrial policy as aspiration and industrial policy as execution has rarely been this clear.

What gives?

The Shift No One Announced

For nearly three decades, the system worked. Between 1991 and mid-2020, the Finance Ministry implemented approximately 99.5% of DGTR’s anti-dumping recommendations. Then something changed; without any formal policy shift, press conference, or parliamentary debate.

The rejection ratio jumped to 70% between October 2020 and March 2021, hit 62% in 2022-23, and has now climbed to 81% between November 2025 and April 2026, up from just 16% in the preceding six months. The Finance Ministry is rejecting four in every five recommendations from its own government’s investigating body.

The stated reasoning, to the extent it has been made public, tends to orbit two concerns: consumer prices and inflation. The logic goes that anti-dumping duties raise input costs for downstream industries, which pass those costs on to consumers. It sounds reasonable. The data says otherwise.

Analysis of 56 DGTR-recommended cases shows a median estimated effect on final consumer prices of just 0.023%. In more than 82% of cases, the price impact would have been below 0.05%. The reason is structural. Most anti-dumping cases involve industrial intermediates like chemicals, fibres, polymers and not goods that sit in a consumer’s shopping basket. By the time the cost of a duty on Phthalic Anhydride or Nylon Filament Yarn makes its way through downstream processing, logistics, packaging, and retail margins, it has been diluted to near-invisibility.

On inflation, the report examined 21 products with pending DGTR recommendations. Even under a conservative 50% cost pass-through assumption, the combined inflation contribution of all 21 products is below 0.001%, or a fraction of a basis point. The inflation argument turns out to be a solution to a problem that doesn’t meaningfully exist.

What is getting approved? Duties on just finished or near-finished goods where the downstream price effects are visible to the customers (read: voters) and politically easier to defend. What is being rejected? Mostly the chemicals, fibres, and industrial inputs where the protection from dumping is actually necessary and the inflationary risk is lowest. The rejections appear to be running on optics more than analysis.

The Long Game India Is Losing

The real cost of this policy gap isn’t in this year’s balance sheet. It’s in what gets dismantled factory by factory, over a decade.

Consider what happened to India’s Penicillin G industry. In 2011, China flooded India with heavily subsidised Pen-G, destroying local capacity. The Directorate General of Anti-Dumping and Allied Duties had recommended imposing an import duty of $2.5 per billion on units of Pen-G imported from China, as well as Mexico.

Alembic too, had requested imposing a duty of $9.28 per kg on Pen-G intermediates from China. However, citing affordability reasons, the finance ministry had continuously rejected the industry’s recommendations and requests to impose anti-dumping duties on imports of penicillin.

As a result, Hindustan Antibiotics Limited, JK Pharma, Torrent, SPIC, and Alembic all shut down production. Once domestic supply was gone, Chinese manufacturers raised prices. India went from self-sufficiency in a foundational antibiotic to deep import dependence, and then had to build a PLI scheme from scratch to rebuild what was lost. As of December 2025, the government has had to set a budget of ₹6,940 crore under the PLI scheme for Bulk Drugs to reduce import dependence. The PLI scheme was an admission that allowing the industry to collapse had been a mistake.

The same pattern is playing out across multiple sectors simultaneously. In Nylon Filament Yarn, six manufacturing units with a combined capacity of 29,450 MT have reportedly shut down, with dumping margins averaging 67.5%, and duties still pending. In sublimation paper, at least 18 MSME units have reportedly closed or are operating under severe distress as Chinese imports price them out.

The 2030 scenario in the report is the one policymakers should be losing sleep over. Economic loss from dumped imports currently stands at ₹1.54 lakh crore across 33 products, projected to rise to ₹2.68–2.70 lakh crore by 2030, with jobs at risk climbing from 24,000 today to 38,000–42,000. That’s not a market correction. That’s industrial capacity being written off; not because it was uncompetitive, but because it was left exposed to illegal pricing it couldn’t fight.

Here’s the compounding problem: building manufacturing capacity takes three to four years from investment decision to commercial production. Committed domestic investment currently stands at ₹1.25 lakh crore, with an additional ₹1.0 lakh crore needed by 2030 to meet projected demand. If those investments don’t happen now because markets are being displaced by dumped imports, India won’t have the capacity in 2030, regardless of how much the GDP has grown.

The Protectionist Charge Doesn’t Stick

India is routinely accused of being a protectionist state. In trade negotiations, this reputation precedes us. The data on anti-dumping duties tells a very different story.

India’s average anti-dumping duty duration is 6.97 years, against a global average of 11.19 years. The US keeps its duties in force for an average of 16.26 years. The EU averages 11.76 years. India is the most restrained user of anti-dumping measures among all major economies, by a considerable margin.

On the scale of duties, the contrast is even sharper. Between April 2024 and December 2025, the US imposed anti-dumping duties with an average maximum rate of 188.5%, with 71.6% of entries exceeding 100%, including 513–632% on Indian melamine. China imposed 166.2% on Cypermethrin. India’s average maximum anti-dumping duty stands at 12.2%, and not a single Indian entry crossed 100%. Sixty percent of Indian entries were at or below 12%.

This is what makes the current moment particularly perverse. India faces 189 active anti-dumping measures against its own exports in foreign jurisdictions, with an average duration of 11 years. We are being hit with triple-digit duties abroad while voluntarily dismantling our own modest trade defences at home. No diplomatic goodwill is being banked in exchange. Meanwhile, India’s trade deficit with China reached USD $99.1 billion in 2024-25, with the imports driving much of it are in categories where DGTR has already found illegal dumping and recommended duties that weren’t imposed.

The Takeaway

Anti-dumping duties are not charity for inefficient industries. They are a legal corrective mechanism that are WTO-compliant, carefully calibrated, and designed to restore fair competition when a foreign exporter is breaking the rules. The DGTR’s job is to find the facts. Its record is perfect so far. What happens after the findings are handed over is where India’s industrial policy is quite unfortunate.

The Finance Ministry’s growing rejection rate is not trade liberalisation. It is selective disarmament. Declining to use tools that every other major trading economy deploys freely, on the basis of inflation fears the evidence does not support. The beneficiary is not the Indian consumer, who would see price differences measured in hundredths of a percentage point. The beneficiary is the foreign exporter who gets to continue selling below cost without consequence.

The European Union and the United States both have formal frameworks for departing from investigating body recommendations. They are transparent, evidence-based, and publicly documented. India, which prides itself on institutional rigour, currently has none of that. When the Finance Ministry rejects a DGTR finding, there is no published rationale, no public-interest assessment, no accountability.

The ₹28,540 crore in annual forex savings is not an aspirational number. It is the cost of a policy gap being paid right now by Indian manufacturers, by Indian MSMEs, and ultimately by the industrial capacity India will need, but may not have, when 2030 arrives.

₹1 lakh crore.

That’s how much Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed to make the Economic Stabilisation Fund. This happened Lok Sabha in March 2026, in response to the discussion on the second batch of supplementary demands. The proposition also includes an immediate net cash outgo of ₹57,381.84 crore to be allocated through the supplementary budget, and the remainder to come from savings of other ministries and departments.

The trigger? A gathering storm of global headwinds. The West Asia conflict driving oil price spikes, the spectre of a Strait of Hormuz blockade, and widening supply chain disruptions that threaten to hit India’s import-dependent economy without warning. India imports 87% of its oil, which means every time crude prices lurch upward, the government absorbs a massive cost. Sometimes those costs become impossible to quietly absorb.

At ₹1 lakh crore against India’s revised nominal GDP of approximately ₹345.5 lakh crore for FY26, the proposed fund works out to roughly 0.29% of GDP. Compare that with Chile’s Economic and Social Stabilisation Fund, which stood at $3.7 billion as of February 2025, at about 0.9% of its GDP. Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global, the gold standard of fiscal buffers, reached NOK 21,300 billion by the end of 2025, at roughly four times Norway’s entire GDP. India is clearly not in that league yet.

So should you be worried that India suddenly needs one of these? Not quite. The more interesting question is why raising this fund’s limits took this long.

A Stabilisation Fund Is Not Your Contingency Fund

India already has a Contingency Fund of India, currently at ₹30,000 crore, which sits under the President and is used for urgent expenditure when Parliament isn’t in session. It is, in practice, a short-term bridge, or money lent quickly and replenished once Parliament approves the outgo formally.

An Economic Stabilisation Fund is something fundamentally different. It is a dedicated financial reserve designed to provide the government with the fiscal headroom to absorb external macroeconomic shocks without compromising the fiscal deficit target. It is set at 4.4% of GDP for 2025-26. Think of the contingency fund as petty cash and the stabilisation fund as the savings account you don’t touch unless something truly unexpected happens. The contingency fund handles a temporary cash crunch. The stabilisation fund handles a geopolitical crisis that sends oil prices to $100 a barrel.

Unlike a sovereign wealth fund that makes long-term foreign investments, a stabilisation fund is a mechanism designed for economies to counter systemic shocks directly, protecting domestic finances while keeping the growth trajectory intact.

Why India Is Building This Now

Sitharaman told Parliament that the proposed fund would provide fiscal headroom, allowing India to respond to global headwinds such as recent crises, unanticipated supply chain disruptions, unexpected shocks to sub-sectors of the Indian economy, and any other events with significant fiscal implications.

The immediate provocation is the West Asia conflict. With Hormuz as a potential flashpoint, India’s energy import bill could spike faster than any supplementary budget can compensate. But the deeper logic is structural. India’s economy has grown large and globally connected enough that external shocks now arrive quickly and hit hard. The COVID-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine disruption to fertiliser supplies, and now the Iran conflict. Each arrived without a fiscal instrument ready to absorb them.

The fund will be placed under the reserve funds managed by the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), Ministry of Finance, and the government has emphasised that this allocation does not entail additional borrowing and will not impact the fiscal deficit target of 4.4% for FY26. Additional receipts of ₹80,000 crore are anticipated in the supplementary budget, meaning the net extra cash spending remains at ₹2.01 lakh crore even with the fund’s creation.

Now, the obvious question here is, “Where will the money come from, if not from borrowings?” Well, there doesn’t seem to be a very clear answer on where this money will come from. However, interestingly, the RBI did announce a record dividend of ₹2.87 lakh crore to the government for FY 2026-27. Now this might sound like a convenient win for the government, where money just appeared when it was necessary, but there’s more to this. The RBI recently reduced its Contingent Risk Buffer to 6.5% from 7.5% in the 2024-25 period. RBI cited macro factors as the reason for reducing this buffer, which allowed its dividend to the government to increase by ₹92,000 crore.

And that’s a bit strange, honestly. The same macro factors that are making the entire country increase its emergency funds seem to be the ones that are making its central bank reduce its own rainy day fund.

How Countries Have Used Theirs

The global playbook on stabilisation funds is both instructive and cautionary.

Chile’s Economic and Social Stabilisation Fund (ESSF) was established in 2007, built on the back of surplus copper revenues. When the 2008 global financial crisis hit, the timing proved fortunate. By drawing on the fund’s capital, Chile’s government could support its economy without issuing more debt. Chile’s GDP growth declined by just 1% in 2008; by contrast, Mexico’s fell by 4.7%. In 2009, Chile drew more than $9 billion from the ESSF, which helped the economy recover faster following the global economic crisis. The fund was then used again during the COVID-19 pandemic for countercyclical spending.

Russia built a Stabilisation Fund from oil revenues through the 2000s, peaking at over $157 billion by early 2008. After the 2008 crisis, the fund was split into a Reserve Fund and a National Welfare Fund. The Reserve Fund was drawn down steadily to plug budget gaps during oil price collapses, and was fully exhausted by 2017. Russia’s lesson is the mirror image of Chile’s: without fiscal discipline and replenishment rules, even a large buffer can disappear.

Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global is the aspirational benchmark at NOK 21,300 billion at the end of 2025. It corresponds to almost four times Norway’s GDP. But Norway built it over decades from petroleum windfalls with ironclad governance rules. It is a different kind of institution, and a different kind of economy.

What This Means for India

Sitharaman said the fund will allow India to respond to recent global crises, unanticipated supply chain disruptions, and unexpected shocks to sub-sectors of the economy, while maintaining its fiscal consolidation roadmap. That last part matters enormously. India’s bond markets and foreign investors watch the fiscal deficit number carefully. The ability to absorb shocks without blowing the 4.4% target is not just about domestic prudence. It is about maintaining credibility in a year of global volatility.

At 0.29% of GDP, the current corpus is a starting point, not a destination. Chile’s fund at roughly 0.9% of GDP has proved its worth in two crises. India, with a far larger and more structurally complex economy, will likely need to grow this buffer meaningfully over time, especially if it formalises the fund as a permanent feature with replenishment rules, rather than a one-time parliamentary allocation.

The government’s emphasis that the additional expenditure will remain within the fiscal deficit target of 4.4% of GDP is a signal worth taking seriously. It suggests this is not crisis spending dressed up as precaution. It is deliberate institutional architecture.

The Takeaway

India building a dedicated Economic Stabilisation Fund is the right move, and arguably an overdue one. The question was never whether India needed a fiscal buffer for external shocks, but whether the political will existed to set aside money before the crisis arrived. The West Asia conflict has apparently provided that urgency. What matters now is what comes next: whether the fund gets replenishment rules, independent oversight, and a corpus that scales with the size of the economy. A rainy-day fund that never gets refilled after the first storm is just a contingency fund with better branding. The architecture is in place. The discipline to sustain it is what will determine whether India’s ESF ends up more like Chile’s prudent buffer, or Russia’s depleted reserve.

In February 2025, hackers linked to North Korea walked away with $1.5 billion in a single afternoon. Their target was Bybit, a Dubai-based cryptocurrency exchange. No guns, no borders, no cargo ships. Just code. That one heist was worth roughly four times what North Korea managed to export legally in all of 2024.

Think about that for a second.

North Korea’s total exports in 2024 reached $360.4 million. That’s a five-year high, but still a number that a mid-sized Indian textile exporter might match. Its imports were $2.3 billion. And of all that trade, China accounted for 99%. For a nation of 26 million people, North Korea’s economic footprint on the world stage is essentially a rounding error. And the Chinese exclusivity has only increased since. China’s trade with North Korea rebounded 25% in 2025 to $2.74 billion, close to pre-pandemic levels.

But this is less trade and more dependency. Beijing props Pyongyang up; in return, it gets a buffer state and a compliant neighbour.

How does a country like this stay standing?

What the Ground Provides

Start with what is underground. North Korea sits on a remarkable mineral base. Its reserves include iron ore, anthracite coal, and the world’s largest deposits of magnesite (a material critical for steel and refractories), centred on Tanch’ŏn in South Hamgyŏng province. Add tungsten, graphite, and molybdenum, and you have a country that, on paper, should be a mining powerhouse. In practice, outdated infrastructure and sanctions limit what can actually be extracted and sold. But the regime keeps trying. Following central committee directives on economic self-reliance, North Korea ramped up mineral extraction in South Pyongan and South Hamgyŏng provinces in 2025. Tungsten and molybdenum are also notable exceptions to UN sanctions, which is why KOTRA’s export data shows that the 2024 export surge was partly driven by tungsten shipments alongside wigs and faux lashes.

Then there is the military economy. North Korea’s heavy industrial base from the Soviet-era, still largely intact, produces weapons, artillery shells, and ballistic missiles. Kim Jong Un has converted this capacity into geopolitical currency. North Korea has supplied troops and weapons to Russia for its war in Ukraine in exchange for diplomatic and economic support. That’s a barter arrangement that bypasses conventional trade entirely.

On the ground, citizens survive through the Jangmadang, or the informal street markets born from the catastrophic 1990s famine. Technically prohibited, tolerated in practice, these markets are the real economy for ordinary North Koreans. The government allows them because the alternative of widespread starvation is worse for regime stability.

And then there is the darkest pillar: cybercrime. North Korean hackers stole $2 billion in cryptocurrency in 2025, a 51% jump from 2024’s $1.3 billion, with the Lazarus Group’s Bybit heist alone accounting for $1.5 billion. A UN sanctions report estimates that illicit cyber activity funds roughly 40% of Pyongyang’s weapons programs. Cryptocurrency theft now constitutes what analysts estimate is approximately 13% of North Korea’s GDP. The Hermit Kingdom has built a shadow export sector that requires no ports, no ships, and no trading partners. Just internet access and impunity.

Where the Economy Breaks Down

The picture turns grim fast when you look at what is missing.

Energy is the most critical gap. North Korea has no proven petroleum reserves and depends on roughly 10,000–11,000 barrels per day of oil per day imported from China, all processed at the country’s single refinery, the Ponghwa facility. After the Soviet Union collapsed, subsidised oil disappeared. The result is chronic energy poverty that cascades into every other sector. From factories running at a fraction of capacity, agricultural machinery sitting idle, to routine blackouts, even in Pyongyang.

Food security is the other chronic failure. Collectivised agriculture under juche ideology (North Korea’s state ideology) has never delivered food self-sufficiency. Mountainous terrain limits arable land, fertiliser supply is inadequate, and private farming is banned in principle. North Korea imports grain even when foreign exchange is scarce.

Consumer manufacturing has been effectively gutted by sanctions. UN Security Council resolutions passed after 2017 banned exports of coal and iron ore to non-China partners and cut off most legitimate trade channels. The industrial sector today produces primarily for state and military use. Consumer goods, healthcare, and basic services remain critically undersupplied for ordinary citizens.

Even informal diplomatic cash flows are drying up. For decades, Chongryon (the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan), funnelled money and goods into North Korea and served as Pyongyang’s de facto embassy in Tokyo. Today, it is a shell. Japanese government data shows only 24,000 North Korean-identified residents in Japan in 2025. Kim Jong Un reportedly sent the organisation $2 million as a handout last year.

India and North Korea

Most Indians would be surprised to learn that the two countries have maintained full diplomatic relations since 1973, rooted in Non-Aligned Movement solidarity. India’s neutral role in the Korean War, where it chaired the Neutral Nations Repatriation Commission and sent a Parachute Field Ambulance unit that treated over 200,000 people, earned it durable goodwill in Pyongyang. That credit has never quite expired.

But the relationship today is thin. India closed its Pyongyang embassy in 2021 citing COVID logistics, and reopened it in December 2024, described as a strategic move to strengthen bilateral ties. The trade numbers tell a different story. Indian exports to North Korea totalled just $2.02 million in 2024, per UN COMTRADE data, against roughly $97 million as recently as 2018. UN sanctions, which India adheres to as a Security Council member, have effectively foreclosed almost all commerce. What little remains is limited to humanitarian goods like food and medicines exempted from sanction regimes.

India’s posture is strategic ambiguity. Maintain the diplomatic thread, stay non-confrontational toward Pyongyang, but align clearly with global nonproliferation norms. Say little publicly, do even less commercially. It is a relationship preserved in careful storage, neither closed nor open.

The Takeaway

North Korea has spent seventy years building an economy designed not to grow, but to survive. Mining keeps some lights on. The military keeps the regime in power. Cybercrime has become an invisible export industry (one that netted more in a single 2025 heist than all of North Korea’s formal exports in 2024). The Jangmadang keeps people fed. And informal diplomatic cash flows from Chongryon in Tokyo, from diaspora networks are steadily going dark.

The country that once called itself self-reliant is, in reality, dependent on one neighbour’s goodwill, one state-sanctioned hacking apparatus, and millions of citizens secretly trading among themselves to survive. The remarkable thing is not that this economy is broken. It is that it keeps going.

Think back to the last time you lost a bet. Maybe it was on a cricket match, a board game outcome, or who would finish dinner first. At some point, someone always says the same thing: “That’s not what we agreed on.” And when it really matters, when real money is on the line, you need someone else to step in and call it.

That same problem, scaled to almost absurd proportions, is playing out on the internet’s biggest prediction markets.

Platforms like Polymarket and Kalshi have turned everyday predictions into a financial sport. You can bet on whether the Fed cuts rates, whether a ceasefire holds, or whether a CEO will resign. The numbers are staggering. Sector trading volume jumped from roughly $16 billion in 2024 to nearly $64 billion in 2025, and in Q1 2026 alone, Polymarket processed $26.2 billion in trades. That’s a 90% jump over the prior quarter. Analysts at Bernstein project total prediction-market volumes could hit $240 billion by the end of 2026. This is no longer niche.

But here’s the thing about prediction markets: real-world events are messy. Cease-fires happen in stages. Politicians submit resignations, then don’t resign. Earnings land with asterisks. When traders disagree on whether a bet has resolved correctly, someone has to play judge. So who exactly is making that call when hundreds of thousands of dollars hang in the balance?

The Crypto Courtroom

Most platforms sort disputes out themselves. Kalshi has an internal enforcement team. Polymarket takes a different route. When traders disagree about how a bet should resolve, the platform outsources the decision to a third-party service called UMA (Universal Market Access). UMA was founded by two former Goldman Sachs traders and is overseen by Risk Labs, a foundation registered in the Cayman Islands. It describes itself as a decentralised oracle protocol. In plain English, UMA is a system for getting anonymous strangers to agree on facts.

The arrangement has regulatory roots. In 2022, Polymarket settled with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission over allegations it had violated American trading rules. By offloading dispute resolution to a diffuse group of token holders, Polymarket bolstered its claim that it was an offshore platform outside U.S. reach. As the platform’s terms of use now state, Polymarket “is not responsible for any disputes related to the resolution of any Contracts.”

How Does UMA Actually Work?

When a disputed Polymarket bet is escalated, UMA token holders vote on the correct outcome. The more tokens a wallet holds, the more weight its vote carries. Most voters are anonymous. Arguments are aired on Discord, with both sides sharing links to support their position. UMA imposes a financial penalty on those who vote with the minority. It’s a mechanism designed, in theory, to push voters toward the truth.

In practice, the system has uncomfortable quirks. A Wall Street Journal analysis of Polymarket and blockchain data found that at least 60% of active UMA voters could be directly linked to Polymarket accounts over the past year. In more than 300 disputes, at least one UMA voter held a direct financial stake in the outcome of the bet they were judging. The system is also far more concentrated than “decentralised” implies. In most disputes, more than 50% of votes are controlled by just 10 wallets.

One organisation that has drawn particular attention is UMA.rocks, a startup that lets token holders pool their holdings and delegate votes to a committee. It accounts for around 8% of votes in recent disputes. A former committee member, who goes by “Scout” on Discord, was fired after manipulation allegations surfaced. Scout denied wrongdoing but acknowledged he routinely placed bets on disputed contracts while simultaneously voting to resolve those very disputes. His defence was candid, if uncomfortable: voters without skin in the game spend “five minutes max” on research, while those with financial stakes are motivated to find the correct answer.

More than 1,150 Polymarket bets have already triggered disputes in 2026, surpassing the total for all of 2025, according to Betmoar, a trading terminal for Polymarket users. Polymarket founder Shayne Coplan acknowledged at a Harvard Business School event in March that the process was “messy,” promising improvements without providing details. Only 0.2% of contracts ever reach UMA votes, the company notes, but at current trading volumes, even 0.2% represents significant money.

When Bets Start Moving Real Things

The dispute-resolution problem might be tolerable if prediction markets were still a quirky internet corner. They’re not anymore.

Both Kalshi and Polymarket now allow bets on corporate performance like earnings surprises, CEO departures, and product launches. Company and financial markets account for roughly $800 million, or about 1%, of Kalshi’s total trading volume, according to internal platform data. The platforms already host active markets on whether Apple’s Tim Cook, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, or Elon Musk will leave their roles. A sufficiently large position in such a market, especially one resolving through an opaque voting process, creates an obvious incentive to nudge events toward a desired outcome.

The insider-trading cases are already arriving. A U.S. Army soldier was charged with five felonies for using classified intelligence to bet on Polymarket, walking away with roughly $400,000 in profit. OpenAI reportedly fired an employee for trading on internal information. Kalshi fined and suspended three political candidates who bet on their own races. JPMorgan has since warned all 320,000 of its employees to think carefully before placing bets linked to their work. Federal lawmakers have introduced the Public Integrity in Financial Prediction Markets Act of 2026 to ban politicians and government staff from betting on government decisions. Minnesota has gone further, banning both platforms outright. A move the CFTC is fighting in court.

The Takeaway

Prediction markets are genuinely useful. Their crowd-sourced probability estimates on elections, interest rates, and geopolitical events have repeatedly beaten expert forecasts. But the same architecture that makes them powerful, the anonymity, token-weighted voting, and offshore incorporation, also makes them easy to game. A platform that lets anonymous token holders resolve disputes in which they hold a financial stake is not a neutral courtroom. It’s a jury where the foreman holds the winning ticket.

When the stakes were a few hundred dollars, none of this mattered much. Now that Polymarket and Kalshi together process over $25 billion a month and are placing bets on how your favourite company’s next earnings call will go, the strangeness of the judges is no longer a footnote. It’s the whole story.

Taiwan’s economy is almost a quarter the size of India’s. Its stock market, as of May 25, is not.

For fifteen years, that statement would have been absurd.

India’s market capitalisation ran well ahead of Taiwan’s through every cycle, the 2008 crisis, the post-COVID rally, the emerging market booms and busts in between. Then, somewhere around 2023, Taiwan’s line on the chart went nearly vertical while India’s started retreating from its peak.

Taiwan’s total market capitalisation crossed $4.95 trillion on May 25, while India stood at $4.92 trillion. That gap does not reflect a difference in economic weight, demographics, or policy. It reflects the earnings power of one semiconductor foundry during one technology cycle.

Let’s find out what exactly happened and if India should be worried.

The Global AI Gold Rush

The world is spending at an unprecedented pace to build AI infrastructure. Data centres, accelerators, next-generation chips. That spending has a physical layer. Servers need processors. Processors need to be fabricated. And the fabrication of the most advanced chips on earth runs through a handful of companies that are not American, not European, and not Indian. They are Taiwanese and Korean. The transition toward agentic AI has triggered what Goldman Sachs strategist Tim Moe calls “an explosion of so-called token demand“, a supply shortage so acute that it is handing extraordinary pricing power to the companies that make the hardware. In 2026, global capital figured that out and moved accordingly.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. or more famously TSMC, is 42% of Taiwan’s entire stock market, or nearly half of the country’s equity value sits in a single chipmaker. So when you read that Taiwan “overtook” India, what that sentence actually contains is one company’s rally, running on one theme. TSMC’s shares are up 49% this year. Q1 profits rose 58%, a number you would expect from a software monopoly, not a business that spends $52 billion a year on factories.

But TSMC is not really a manufacturer in the traditional sense. It is the sole producer of chips nobody else on earth knows how to make at scale, like the sub-7nm nodes powering every Nvidia GPU, every Apple processor, every AI accelerator a hyperscaler is racing to deploy. What looks like a 2026 rally is actually a very late recognition of a monopoly that was always there.

Korea arrived at the same conclusion through different hardware. Samsung and SK Hynix dominate global memory with the DRAM and NAND chips that store data inside AI systems. Together they make up 42% of the KOSPI, which has risen over 80% this year. Goldman Sachs, which calls Korea its highest-conviction market in Asia, forecasts 300% corporate earnings growth in 2026. Not 30%. Three hundred. Driven by a record supply shortfall in memory chips against hyperscaler demand that keeps accelerating. The KOSPI recently crossed 7,500 for the first time. Goldman’s 12-month target is 9,000.

Taiwan, according to Goldman’s Moe, is “well over 80%“ exposed to AI-related revenue streams. Korea stands at around 60%.

“Both indices have effectively become AI and semiconductor proxies,” as June Chua, head of Asia equities at Manulife Investment Management, put it.

Which means something important: index-level gains in Taiwan and Korea say less about broad domestic strength than about the earnings power of a narrow group of exporters. This is not a story about two thriving economies. It is a supply chain story. The world decided to build AI infrastructure at speed, and the companies making the physical hardware happen to be listed in two countries. Their stock markets came along for the ride.

India’s did not.

The $24 Billion Misread

Global funds have sold nearly $24 billion of Indian equities so far in 2026 as capital chased the AI boom in Taiwan and Korea. India’s benchmark index is down 8%, heading for its first annual drop in over a decade. India’s weight in the MSCI Emerging Markets index has fallen from 19.4% to 12% since the start of last year, while Taiwan’s has risen to 25% and Korea’s to 19%.

The instinct is to read this as India falling behind. That reading is partially right and importantly wrong.

The foreign selling is not a conviction call against India’s fundamentals. It is a carry trade decision. A fund manager choosing between TSMC’s 49% return and a Nifty that, after translating through a weakening rupee, is not a difficult choice. When crude sits at ~$100 per barrel and US tariffs are creating global anxiety, the risk-reward case for India simply does not hold up. The money that left was never really India’s money. It was momentum capital that parked here during India’s years of relative outperformance and is now repricing faster than Indian earnings can justify the premium.

Does it mean Indian markets are breaking?

Not really.

While foreigners were selling, Indians were buying. Monthly SIP inflows hit ₹500 billion in March. That’s the highest in eight months. The National Pension Scheme was adding approximately $1.7 billion a month into equities through Q1. Domestic institutions absorbed a historically large volume of foreign selling and kept the index from a structural collapse.

The more telling signal is further down the cap curve. FIIs pulled $21 billion. The Nifty fell 10.46% year-to-date. And yet the Nifty Microcap 250 jumped 21.55% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 18.44% in April alone.

Indian retail investors are betting on India at the exact moment global capital is looking the other way. Whether that is contrarian conviction or a structural gap in how the two groups are reading the same information is the more honest question to ask.

What The Scoreboard Is Actually Counting

Markets do not price what a country has today. They price what they believe a country will produce tomorrow. The IT sector now represents 40% of the MSCI Emerging Markets index, and that weight is not India’s IT services sector.

It is TSMC, Samsung, SK Hynix. The equity markets of the world have effectively declared that the physical hardware layer of the AI economy is where returns will compound. India’s most globally integrated sector of IT services sits one layer above that. And that layer is precisely what AI is beginning to compress. Generative AI does not need large teams to write code, test software, or manage IT transitions at scale. The model that built Bengaluru is facing its most direct structural challenge in two decades, and the challenge is coming from the same technology making Taiwan and Korea rich.

Consider the two economies side by side for a moment. India carries public debt near 83.4% of GDP. Taiwan’s sits around 27.6%. India holds approximately $688 billion in foreign exchange reserves. That’s larger than Taiwan’s $602.45 billion. India’s gold reserves stand near 880 tonnes against Taiwan’s 424. These are the balance sheet numbers of a large, complex sovereign economy carrying real macroeconomic weight. Taiwan’s numbers look more like a corporate treasury, because in many ways that is what it is: a concentrated export economy whose stock market is essentially a proxy for one supply chain. The resilience profiles are structurally different. But global capital in 2026 is not paying a premium for resilience. It is paying a premium for AI earnings exposure, and only two countries are offering it in concentrated, liquid, investable form.

India has the data economy, the consumer base, the engineering talent, the UPI infrastructure that processed ₹29.03 lakh crore in transactions last month alone. These are not small things. But very little of it is listed in a form that plugs directly into the AI value chain. And that’s the part that global capital is currently willing to reprice at 5x GDP.

The Takeaway

Taiwan and Korea are not structurally unbeatable. They are cyclically dominant. TSMC at 42% of a national index is a concentration risk as much as it is a triumph. A single earnings miss, a geopolitical escalation in the Taiwan Strait, a pause in hyperscaler capex, any of these reverses years of gains faster than they arrived. Korea’s 300% earnings growth forecast is historic precisely because it is unprecedented, and unprecedented numbers mean-revert. When that rotation comes, the capital will go looking for large, liquid, democratic markets with decades of nominal GDP growth ahead. India fits that description almost perfectly.

The problem is not where India stands today. It is what India is building for tomorrow.

The decade ahead will be won by countries that manufacture something the world cannot source elsewhere. Taiwan has silicon. Korea has memory. The question India has not yet answered loudly enough, for its policymakers, its listed companies, and its capital market architects, is what it makes for the global technology stack that cannot be made anywhere else.

On the afternoon of May 20, a video started doing the rounds on Indian social media. In it, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, visiting Rome, hands Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni a small packet of something. Meloni holds it up, breaks into a wide smile, and says for the benefit of cameras and history, “He gifted a very, very good toffee. Melody.” The clip revived the internet’s beloved “Melodi” nickname for the two leaders, and within hours, it had jumped from group chats to trading terminals.

By that afternoon, shares of Parle Industries Ltd. were surging. The BSE-listed company’s stock shot up 5%, the most in two months, as traders appeared to mistake it for Parle Products Pvt., the unlisted maker of Melody candies and the iconic Parle-G biscuits.

The problem? Parle Industries is a separate BSE-listed entity with no direct business link to Melody candies. Melody is manufactured by Parle Products, an FMCG major that is privately held and not listed on any exchange.

The Wrong Parle

The stock didn’t just flicker and fade. Parle Industries saw frenzied buying for a second straight session the following day, hitting the upper circuit at ₹5.51 on the BSE. Two days of circuit-to-circuit buying for a company whose only connection to the viral moment was sharing three syllables of a brand name.

What exactly is Parle Industries? It is a micro-cap software company with a market capitalisation so small it barely registers in any sectoral index. Parle Products, the company that actually makes Melody, Monaco, KrackJack, and Parle-G, has no intention of listing. It has operated as a private entity for decades, built on a distribution moat that reaches every kirana store from Leh to Kanyakumari. The two companies share a name, nothing more. Parle Products didn’t rally because Parle Products couldn’t rally. It simply isn’t on any exchange.

Yet hundreds of retail investors, presumably watching the clip loop on Instagram Reels, heard the word “Parle,” pulled up whatever stock their brokerage app auto-suggested, and bought. Market watchers noted that many retail traders likely saw the “Parle” name trending online alongside the viral Melody moment and rushed into the listed stock without verifying whether the company was actually linked to the candy brand.

This isn’t a uniquely Indian problem. It just happens to recur with unusual regularity here.

Trump, Sushi, and the AI Trade That Wasn’t

Halfway around the world, a different kind of mistaken identity was playing out. This one, allegedly inside the portfolio of the most powerful elected official on the planet.

On February 2, 2026, someone acting on behalf of President Donald Trump spent between $1 million and $5 million acquiring shares in Kura Sushi USA (NASDAQ: KRUS), the American subsidiary of Japan’s Kura Sushi, a revolving sushi chain with 91 US locations and a market capitalisation of roughly $600 million. The transaction surfaced in documents published on May 14 by the US Office of Government Ethics, which revealed more than 3,700 trades executed on Trump’s behalf in the first quarter of the year, averaging over 40 transactions per day.

The sushi chain stood out sharply. Out of those 3,600 total orders, Kura Sushi was one of just 36 companies to receive an investment in the $1–5 million range, and it stands out as the only restaurant in the bunch. Trump’s other large bets were in Nvidia, Apple, Amazon, and Oracle. All companies that are either driving or supplying the AI boom.

A theory quickly emerged. Trump, or his advisers, had confused Kura Sushi with FujiKura, a Tokyo-based fiber-optics and computer hardware supplier that had seen massive growth on the back of the AI boom. The names are phonetically close. The businesses however, sushi versus semiconductors, are about as far apart as two companies can get.

News of the disclosure sent Kura Sushi shares up by more than 5%. A restaurant chain that briefly became a “Trump trade” purely on speculation about a clerical error. Kura Oncology, which carries the ticker KURA and develops cancer treatments, was also up 9% on the day as online speculation swirled about what Trump had actually intended to buy. Three companies, three entirely different businesses, one shared syllable, and one enormous, bewildering rally.

India’s Investor Boom And Its Blind Spot

The comedic value of these episodes is real, but they illuminate something more structural. India has one of the fastest-growing retail investor bases in the world. As of October 2025, India had nearly 13.6 crore investors holding more than 21 crore demat accounts, with approximately one lakh new demat accounts being opened every single day. That is extraordinary. What is less extraordinary is what many of those new investors actually know about the markets they are entering.

SEBI’s 2025 Investor Survey, covering over 90,000 households across urban and rural India, found that 63% of Indian households are aware of at least one securities market product, but actual participation dwindles to just 9.5% of households, roughly 32.1 million. Awareness and action aren’t the same thing, and neither are awareness and understanding. Between FY22 and FY25, retail investors lost close to ₹3 lakh crore in derivatives markets alone, with SEBI estimating that 91% of retail derivatives traders ended up losing money. The problem isn’t that people lack access to markets. It’s that access has dramatically outpaced education.

The Parle episode is a clean illustration of what that gap looks like in practice. Viral content creates a moment of excitement. Excitement turns into a search query. The search query, often just a brand name, surfaces the nearest listed entity. The buy button gets pressed before anyone asks the obvious question: wait, is this actually the same company?

SEBI has run thousands of investor awareness programmes, launched a Financial Literacy Quiz in 2026, and built out the SCORES grievance redressal system. These are genuine efforts. But they struggle to compete with a 15-second Reels clip of two world leaders laughing over toffees.

The Takeaway

The deeper issue is that Indian retail investors are now operating in a market architecture that was not designed for the pace at which they are arriving. Mobile broking apps have made trading faster and cheaper than ever, but faster and cheaper is not the same as smarter. When a Prime Minister gifts candy on international television, an unlisted confectionery company briefly acquires the power to move a listed software stock. When a US president files disclosure forms showing 3,700 trades in a quarter, a sushi chain briefly joins the AI rally.

Markets have always made room for noise. What has changed is the speed at which noise now converts into price, and the number of retail wallets caught in the middle before the correction arrives.

The next time a ticker rallies on a viral moment, perhaps the better question to ask is not how much is it up, but did anyone actually check what this company does?

There’s a good chance that the last time you ordered dal makhani at 11 pm, you didn’t stop to wonder who technically owns the app you used. As far as Swiggy is concerned, it’s as Indian as it gets. Founded in Bengaluru, serving hundreds of millions of Indian customers, built on the back of an army of Indian delivery workers, and publicly listed on domestic stock exchanges. But from a legal standpoint, Swiggy is not an Indian-owned company. As of September 2025, foreign investors held just under 60% of its shares. Prosus, a Netherlands-listed entity, holds 33% (the single largest stake). SoftBank, Tencent, Accel, and a clutch of other global funds complete the picture. Sriharsha Majety, Swiggy’s CEO and co-founder, holds roughly 4%.

This distinction of Swiggy’s Indian spirit, but foreign ownership, turns out to matter enormously. Not just as a point of national pride, but as a hard commercial constraint that is costing Swiggy ground in the most important battle it is currently fighting (quick commerce). The company has spent the better part of a year preparing to change that. Last week, it ran into a wall.

What Does “Indian-Owned” Actually Mean?

Under India’s Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), there is a precise legal category called an India-Owned and Controlled Company, or IOCC. To qualify, both ownership and control must rest with resident Indian citizens or eligible Indian entities. This includes having a board composition and nomination framework that demonstrably supports domestic control over key decisions. It is not a ceremonial label. It directly determines which business model a company is even permitted to operate in sectors sensitive to foreign capital.

For Swiggy, the prize is its quick commerce arm, Instamart. India’s FDI policy for e-commerce carries a restriction. Internationally funded marketplace platforms cannot hold their own inventory. They can only act as facilitators, earning a commission on every order that passes through their platform. An IOCC, by contrast, can operate an inventory-led model, buying products directly from brands, warehousing them in dark stores, and selling them end-to-end to customers. That single change alters everything. How revenue is recognised, how supply chains are controlled, what unit economics look like, and crucially, whether you can develop private-label products that carry margins no commission structure can replicate.

Think of it this way. Under a marketplace model, you earn a slice of every transaction. Under an inventory model, you own the transaction. The difference shows up clearly on the income statement, and even more so when comparing Swiggy’s numbers to those of its largest competitor.

Zomato’s parent, Eternal, became an IOCC in April 2025. Its quick commerce arm, Blinkit, made the inventory switch in September that year. The effect on its books was immediate and dramatic. Eternal’s March quarter operating revenue grew threefold year-on-year to ₹17,292 crore, while net profit rose 4.5 times to ₹174 crore. Part of that jump is not pure operational improvement. When you shift from recognising only commissions to booking the full value of each sale, your revenue line expands dramatically. Blinkit now leads India’s quick commerce market with roughly 50% share, well ahead of Instamart’s 27%.

Swiggy, by contrast, reported a 45% year-on-year rise in operating revenue for the March quarter at ₹6,383 crore. That’s respectable growth, but delivered on a structurally constrained model. Its net loss narrowed 26% on reduced cash burn. Swiggy has not been standing still. Instamart now operates over 1,000 dark stores across India and has been investing heavily in speed and assortment to close the gap with Blinkit. But investment alone cannot replicate what a different regulatory classification enables. India’s quick commerce market is already worth $3.65 billion in 2026, projected to reach $6.64 billion by 2031, and the gap between a marketplace model and an inventory model compounds at scale. Staying locked in a commission-only structure while this category surges is not a sustainable competitive position.

A Straightforward Plan That Hit a Wall

Swiggy had been methodically laying the groundwork for this transition. In May 2025, it launched a standalone Instamart app, signalling that quick commerce deserved its own distinct identity. In September, it carved Instamart into a step-down subsidiary. That’s the kind of structural preparation companies undertake when a major regulatory pivot is being planned. The logical next step was amending its Articles of Association, restructuring board nomination rights so that resident Indian management demonstrably controlled the company’s governance. That would have been the formal signal to regulators that Swiggy was ready for IOCC classification, at least once the ownership arithmetic caught up.

That’s where things got stuck.

On May 21, 2026, Swiggy put the AoA amendment to a shareholder vote. Special resolutions under Indian company law require 75% approval. The proposal received 72.36% of votes in favour. The planned appointments of additional executive, non-independent directors, or the people who would embody Indian management control on the board, will not take effect from June 1, 2026.

The irony is striking. Those same shareholders approved an unrelated director appointment with 98.98% in favour. It was a targeted veto. A specific bloc of foreign institutional shareholders, likely concerned that a board restructured towards Indian management could reduce their oversight and governance influence, possibly withheld the vote.

Swiggy was careful to note that even a successful vote would not have automatically conferred IOCC status. Additional regulatory and corporate actions would still have been required. But the AoA amendment was the first essential brick. Without it, the journey cannot begin.

There is also a harder, longer-term problem. For IOCC classification, resident Indian ownership must cross 50%. With foreign shareholders controlling nearly 60% of Swiggy today, the company needs either Indian institutional investors to significantly increase their stakes, or existing foreign shareholders to partially exit, or some combination of the two. Neither happens quickly, or for cheap. Secondary transactions of this scale require willing sellers and capable buyers at the same time. The company is still posting losses. FY26 net losses widened to ₹4,154 crore, which does not make Indian capital especially eager to lead a large ownership restructuring. The IOCC clock is ticking, but the levers that move it are largely outside Swiggy’s direct control.

The Takeaway

For investors watching the quick commerce race, this vote deserves careful attention. Swiggy is competing in a market where its primary rival has already unlocked a structurally superior model. Blinkit’s inventory enabled private labels, tighter supply chain control, and margin levers that a marketplace operator simply cannot access. The question now is how quickly Swiggy can bring its resident shareholding above 50% and rebuild the governance case for a renewed AoA vote. Every quarter that passes without IOCC status is a quarter in which the competitive asymmetry deepens.

The regulatory architecture of FEMA classifications, and FDI restrictions on inventory was designed for a simpler era. Quick commerce has outgrown it. Swiggy’s failed vote is a reminder that in India, the ownership structure on a company’s legal documents can determine which business model it is even allowed to run.

Swiggy will try again. It has no real choice. But until it can change its legal address, it is running a race where the starting line is already a few metres back.

India generates approximately 62 million tonnes of municipal solid waste every year, growing at 4% annually. The Ghazipur landfill, a mountain of rotting garbage taller than the Qutub Minar, is its most honest monument.

The government knows this. The Union Budget 2025 earmarked ₹12,192 crore for the Swachh Bharat Mission (₹5,000 crore for urban waste management, the rest for rural sanitation). And in January 2026, the Ministry of Environment scrapped the decade-old Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 and notified sweeping new SWM Rules 2026, effective April 1, 2026. Bulk generators alone account for nearly 30% of total solid waste. The rules also mandate cement plants to begin replacing solid fuel with Refuse Derived Fuel produced from municipal waste, scaling from 5% to 15% substitution over six years.

So far, so legislative. But India is also importing something to improve its waste management, and it is not what you think. It is not a garbage truck. Not landfill technology. Not a government contract with a European recycling company. It is a city. Specifically, one Japanese city’s entire philosophy of turning industrial waste into economic value. And the state that is doing the importing is Telangana.

In June 2025, on Telangana State Formation Day, Kitakyushu Mayor Kazuhisa Takeuchi flew down to Hyderabad, personally invited by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, who had visited Japan two months earlier, and signed an MoU with the state government.

The goals? Zero-emission targets, circular economy practices, and urban innovation. At a CII conference titled “From Kitakyushu to Telangana: Catalysing Sustainable Industrial Growth,” IT Minister D. Sridhar Babu announced that Telangana would build an 80-acre eco-town modelled on Kitakyushu’s eco-industrial blueprint. Nippon Steel Engineering, Amita Holdings, and EX Research Institute had already signed Letters of Intent during Revanth Reddy’s April visit. Site selection and master planning began in 2025, with construction expected in 2026 and an operational rollout in 2028. The state is exploring direct flights between Hyderabad and Kitakyushu, a Japanese language school, and TOMCOM language training. 50 Telangana youth have already secured jobs in Japan. The ambition? Hyderabad and Kitakyushu as sister cities, all under the “Telangana Rising 2047” banner.

But to understand why this partnership makes sense, you need to know what Kitakyushu actually did to itself — and why the world still talks about it.

What India Has Planned and Japan’s Long Road There

In the 1960s, Kitakyushu was Japan’s industrial engine. Home to the Yawata Steel Works since 1901, it had grown into one of the country’s four major industrial zones, burning coal and belching sulphur dioxide with the casual confidence of a nation that equated smoke with prosperity.

Then the bill arrived. Dokai Bay, which runs through the city, became so toxic from factory effluent that locals called it the “Sea of Death.” The sky above turned perpetually grey. And in a detail that stuck in Japan’s collective environmental memory, it was ordinary housewives, not regulators, not corporations, who forced the first change. As early as the 1950s, local women petitioned city authorities about the air their children were breathing. That citizen pressure eventually built into something institutional.

Kitakyushu’s turnaround was long, deliberate, and expensive. The city and private sector together invested JPY 805 billion (the city contributing JPY 552 billion and industry JPY 253 billion) into pollution controls, sewerage upgrades, and emission reduction agreements. The results were extraordinary. 98% of sulphur dioxide emissions were eventually eliminated. By 1985, an OECD report declared Kitakyushu had transformed from a “grey city” to a “green city.”

But the city didn’t stop at cleaning up. In 1997, it launched its Eco-Town Project, converting idle industrial land in the Hibikinada area into a cluster of recycling and circular economy businesses. PET bottles, home appliances, automobiles: all processed locally, in a zone designed so that one company’s waste became another’s raw material. In 1990, Kitakyushu became the first Japanese city to win the UNEP’s Global 500 award. In 1992, it was among twelve cities honoured at the UN Earth Summit in Rio. The OECD later selected it as one of four Green Growth Model Cities worldwide, alongside Paris, Chicago, and Stockholm.

Today, hundreds of species of marine life have returned to Dokai Bay. The skies are blue again.

Why India Needs This More Than It Knows

The Telangana partnership looks forward-looking on paper. In practice, it is responding to a problem that is already here.

India’s average PM2.5 concentration in 2025 was 48.9 µg/m³. That’s nearly ten times the WHO’s recommended annual limit of 5 µg/m³. The country ranked sixth globally in air pollution in the 2025 World Air Quality Report, with all 25 of the world’s most polluted cities sitting in India, Pakistan, or China. New Delhi, at 82.2 µg/m³, remains the most polluted capital on earth despite recording a three-year low.

The waste situation is equally clear. India generates approximately 62 million tonnes of municipal solid waste every year, growing at 4% annually. Nearly 70% of it is improperly handled. It is either dumped, burned, or left to contaminate groundwater. Delhi alone generates 11,000 metric tonnes of waste daily, with the Ghazipur landfill serving as its most visible monument to the problem. By 2030, urban India is projected to generate 165 million tonnes of MSW annually as cities swell.

This is exactly the trajectory Kitakyushu once walked. The difference is that India is trying to get ahead of the worst of it, rather than waiting for the Sea of Death moment. Urban waste generation per person is already at 0.7 kg per day in 2025. That’s four to six times the figure from 1999. By 2050, as India’s urban population approaches 814 million, annual waste generation could hit 436 million tonnes. India’s cities are beyond dirty. They are expensive to be dirty in, with healthcare costs, lost productivity, and degraded real estate values silently compounding the bill every year.

The Telangana eco-town is a start. Site selection near the Outer Ring Road is under consideration for its connectivity and land availability. Collaboration will span Net Zero targets, riverfront development near the Musi river, circular economy practices, clean technologies, and digital innovation. Kitakyushu’s mayor is personally advising the Telangana government on adapting the model to Indian conditions. The Kitakyushu Model, its systematic toolkit of waste management, energy management, water management, and pollution control, has already been offered to Asian cities for replication. Telangana is now one of its most ambitious takers.

The Takeaway

Telangana is borrowing more than just a set of technologies from Kitakyushu. It is also borrowing a philosophy: that industrial growth and environmental health are not in conflict, and that the most sustainable cities are those that treat waste as a resource rather than a problem to bury on the outskirts of town.

Kitakyushu took about four decades to go from poisoned bay to OECD model city, and it needed a combination of angry housewives, patient government, and half a trillion yen in investment to do it. India does not have four decades of clean runway. Its cities are urbanising too fast, its waste crisis is already visible to the naked eye, and the political window for ambitious environmental projects opens and closes with elections.

But the conversation is now live, the agreements are signed, and the first shovel hits the ground in 2026. Critically, the Kitakyushu partnership is a commercial arrangement backed by Japanese firms that have done this before and know what it takes. The Kitakyushu Model has already been shared with other Asian cities as an exportable toolkit. Telangana is the most high-profile Indian buyer so far.

The harder question, as always, is whether a model that emerged from Japan’s particular combination of civic pressure, institutional will, and patient capital can take root in India’s more chaotic urban reality. Telangana’s track record on investment attraction, (₹3 lakh crore in 18 months), suggests the state is at least serious about finding out. One eco-town won’t fix India’s cities. But every city that gets fixed had to start with one.

That’s how many iPhones Apple sold in 2021, when pandemic-rattled factories struggled to keep up with demand. That was its best performance in five years. The year after, it sold more. By 2025, the company set an all-time record of 247 million iPhones, generating $416 billion in total revenue. Over the same stretch, it sold tens of millions of Macs, iPads, and AirPods, and even crossed $100 billion from services alone.

When its rivals scrambled, Apple compounded. How?

Part of the answer lies in something Apple has never officially advertised. It has spent years selling imperfect chips, deliberately, profitably, and at scale.

When the World Ran Out of Chips

To understand what Apple pulled off, you need to remember how bad things got.

The global chip shortage that started in 2020 was quite the supply chain catastrophe. At its peak, smartphone production fell roughly 6% in 2021, with major assemblers like Foxconn warning of serious shortfalls for months. Samsung was reportedly staring at a potential 20% drop in Q2 2021 shipments as it scrambled for components. Google restricted its Pixel 5a to just two markets at launch. Xiaomi hiked prices mid-release on the Redmi Note 10 in India, of all places. The number of new phone models launched in the first half of 2021 fell 18% year-on-year.

Apple wasn’t completely immune. Tim Cook warned in 2021 that chip constraints would dent iPhone and iPad sales. But the damage was comparatively minor. Apple actually gained market share during the shortage. The company had a preferential supply agreement with TSMC, its primary chip manufacturer. And it had another trick entirely.

The Art of the Imperfect Chip

Here’s something chip engineers have known for decades but rarely explain to the rest of us: no two chips off a production line are exactly alike.

When TSMC etches silicon wafers for Apple, it produces hundreds of chips per wafer. Some perform at peak specifications. Others have tiny flaws like a malfunctioning graphics core, a power-hungry transistor that drains a battery faster than it should. Traditionally, these chips would be discarded or sold off cheaply. The industry calls the sorting process “binning”, or grouping chips by performance, much like hotels charging different rates for the same building depending on which floor your room is on, or diamonds priced by clarity.

Apple, however, figured out it could do something far more interesting with its rejects.

According to a Wall Street Journal analysis of nearly 200 Apple documentation pages, since 2021, Apple has sold six of its A-series chips, each with one fewer GPU core, inside a cheaper device, after the fully functional version first appeared in a more expensive iPhone. The mechanics are elegantly simple: a defective graphics core can be disabled, leaving a chip that works perfectly well, just not at the absolute top of its range.

The iPhone 17e uses chips that didn’t qualify for the iPhone 17. The iPhone Air runs on chips that wouldn’t meet specs for the 17 Pro. And Apple’s new $599 MacBook Neo, its first entry-level laptop, is powered by an A18 Pro with a 5-core graphics processor, one fewer core than the version inside the iPhone 16 Pro. What would have been scrap became a product category.

The strategy actually dates back to Apple’s very first custom chip. The A4, which powered the original iPad, was also slotted into the iPhone 4 and later the second-generation Apple TV. Chips that drew too much power for a smartphone battery worked fine in a TV box plugged into a wall outlet. Something similar happened with the S7 chips, which ended up in the second-generation HomePod rather than the Apple Watch they were originally designed for.

What began as a salvage operation has become, in the words of supply-chain analysts, a cornerstone of Apple’s design strategy. A precise instrument for segmenting its product lineup without wasting a single silicon wafer.

Apple Isn’t Alone in This

Apple isn’t the only company that figured this out. Nvidia runs a similar playbook. When chips come off its production lines, the best performers go into data centre GPUs where computing speed is everything. Chips with slight imperfections become gaming cards. Even chips with more significant defects find homes in automotive systems. In Q3 2025, Nvidia’s data centre revenue alone hit $30.8 billion, a figure analysts attribute partly to how efficiently the company converts its chip output into a tiered product range.

Intel and AMD have practiced versions of binning for years. The basic logic is identical: don’t discard what fails the hardest test; find a product where it passes.

For Apple, though, the advantage cuts sharper. When Apple bought processors from Samsung or Intel, it had no say in what came off the line. Now, having commissioned TSMC to produce full silicon wafers, Apple owns every chip on that wafer, perfect or not.

The India Angle

Here’s where India enters the picture, and where the story gets interesting.

Apple assembled roughly 55 million iPhones in India in 2025, a 53% jump from 36 million the previous year, putting India at approximately 25% of Apple’s total global iPhone output. Foxconn and Tata Electronics now operate five assembly facilities across Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. iPhone exports from India crossed $17.4 billion in the 12 months ending March 2025, up nearly 60% year-on-year. These are genuinely transformative numbers.

But they come with an important nuance.

India’s iPhone factories are assembly operations. The chips, like the A18 Pros, the binned and imperfect ones still come from TSMC’s fabs in Taiwan. India plugs in at the final stage, fitting screens, batteries, and components into a finished device. The chip strategy that gives Apple its resilience is entirely upstream of anything happening in Hosur or Sriperumbudur.

That said, binning does shape what lands on Indian assembly lines in a meaningful way. When Apple launches a lower-cost product like the 17e, the iPhone Air, eventually the MacBook Neo, these are built around chips that didn’t qualify for premium models. They are Apple’s volume products by design. And volume products are exactly what scale-hungry Indian factories are built to produce. India’s 5-8% higher manufacturing costs compared to China are more easily absorbed on high-volume, lower-margin devices than on the Pro models, where every dollar of cost matters.

There’s a longer game here too. Apple CEO Tim Cook has acknowledged that chip shortages are now preventing the company from meeting customer demand for iPhones and increasingly for Macs. TSMC, Apple’s sole supplier of advanced chips, is itself struggling to meet soaring demand for AI silicon. The MacBook Neo has been so popular that Apple burned through its stockpile of binned chips and placed fresh orders for new A18 Pro silicon just to keep the Neo’s production lines running.

In other words, Apple made imperfection so desirable that it ran out of it.

On February 28, 2026, US and Israeli jets struck Iran again. Not for the first time. Eight months earlier, in June 2025, a similar 12-day war had already done serious damage: $200–270 billion worth of infrastructure damage, according to security firm Global Guardian. Iran fired over 550 ballistic missiles and 1,000 suicide drones. Israel suffered 28 deaths and roughly $6 billion in economic burden in the first 20 days. Iran lost over 1,060 people, nine top nuclear scientists, and the bulk of its conventional military leadership.

But the real target wasn’t soldiers. It was uranium.

Israel’s Operation Rising Lion and the US’s follow-up Operation Midnight Hammer, pulverised Iran’s three key nuclear sites: Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. The Pentagon claimed the strikes set Iran’s program back by one to two years. The Institute for Science and International Security said the centrifuge enrichment program had been “effectively destroyed.”

And Iran’s currency? The rial went from 800,000 per dollar pre-war to over 1.6 million by early 2026. Inflation crossed 100%. The IMF estimates Iran’s economy will shrink 6.1% in 2026.

By any rational reading, Iran has been broken. The logical move would be to fold. Sign a deal. Promise never to build a bomb.

Instead, the opposite is happening. Iran has refused to surrender its enriched uranium stockpile, with enough material, the IAEA says, for about 10 warheads. Its newly installed Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has vowed to guard nuclear technology like the country’s borders. The April 2026 nuclear talks in Islamabad collapsed after 21 hours.

For 23 years, Iran has officially said its nuclear program is for energy, citing a 2003 fatwa from the (now-assassinated) Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. But the punishment for not having a bomb just got very expensive. To understand why Iran might change its mind, we need to rewind.

How the world tried to put the nuclear genie back

In 1958, Irish Foreign Minister Frank Aiken stood before the UN General Assembly and warned that the great powers had built “the military resources to destroy themselves and to destroy us all.” A decade of diplomacy later, his lobbying produced the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) of 1968.

The deal was simple: only five countries (the US, Soviet Union, UK, France, and China) would be allowed to keep nuclear weapons. Everyone else would forgo them in exchange for help with civilian nuclear energy. The five would, in turn, work toward disarmament.

By 2000, most of the world had signed up. Brazil and Argentina dismantled their programmes. Switzerland gave up. South Africa actually built six warheads and then destroyed them in 1989-90 before Nelson Mandela took office. Sweden eventually joined NATO instead.

The disarmament logic was straightforward. Bombs are expensive, sanctions are crippling, and Western security guarantees are cheaper. Why pay to be hated when you can sit under America’s umbrella for free?

But the umbrella had holes

India never bought it. In 1974, less than a decade after China went nuclear next door, India tested its first device, the “Smiling Buddha”, and called the NPT a system of “nuclear apartheid.” In 1988, Rajiv Gandhi told the UN it was as biased as believing “colonialism is a civilizing mission.”

Today, only four nuclear-armed states sit outside the NPT. India, Pakistan, Israel (which still won’t confirm it has bombs) and North Korea (which exited in 2003). Every one of them got rewarded for refusing to play along.

When India and Pakistan openly tested in 1998, the US imposed sanctions. Those sanctions were lifted within days of 9/11 because Washington suddenly needed Pakistan against the Taliban and India against China. North Korea got sanctioned, then it quietly courted; today Kim Jong Un is shipping weapons to Russia and Trump publicly talks about their “great relationship.” Israel has never signed the NPT and enjoys an unbroken US veto at the UN.

The pattern is brutal but obvious. If you have a bomb, you eventually get respect.

What happens if you don’t?

Compare that with Iraq and Libya. Saddam Hussein had a nuclear programme decades ago but had abandoned it long before 2003, when the US invaded anyway. Muammar Gaddafi voluntarily surrendered Libya’s nuclear programme in 2003 and was dragged through the streets and killed in 2011. Ukraine inherited the third-largest nuclear stockpile in the world from the Soviet collapse, gave it up in 1994 in exchange for a written “security assurance” from the US, UK, and Russia, and lost Crimea in 2014 and Donbas in 2022.

Bill Clinton, who signed that piece of paper, admitted in 2023, “None of them believe that Russia would have pulled this stunt if Ukraine still had their weapons.”

The architect of Pakistan’s bomb, Abdul Qadeer Khan, who also sold enrichment technology to Iran, Libya, and North Korea and was pardoned the day after confessing on TV, put it more simply in a 2011 Newsweek essay: “Had Iraq and Libya been nuclear powers, they wouldn’t have been destroyed in the way we have seen recently.”

The only way to protect yourself from getting hit by a big stick, it seems, is to get a bigger stick.

What Iran sees in the mirror

Now sit in Tehran’s shoes. Your air defences are gone. Your generals are dead. Your currency is in free fall. The Strait of Hormuz blockade is costing both sides money but Trump claims you’re losing $500 million a day. The country that pulled out of your 2015 nuclear deal (the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action), has bombed you twice and threatened to send you “back to the stone ages.”

On the other hand, you can see Pakistan being courted, India being celebrated, North Korea being praised, and Israel being defended.

And about a dozen other countries like Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, South Korea, Japan are now openly debating the same question. South Korean polls show support for an independent nuclear weapon at record highs. In Japan, the only country to have suffered an atomic attack, the subject is no longer taboo.

That’s a dozen latent nuclear states watching to see how this Iran story ends. If Iran caves, they’ll conclude diplomacy works. If Iran builds a bomb and survives, like North Korea did, they’ll conclude the bomb works.

The Takeaway

The original NPT bargain rested on a promise. Give up your bombs, and we’ll keep you safe. For 60 years, the US guaranteed that promise. Trump has now broken it twice, first by tearing up the 2015 JCPOA Iran had signed with Obama, then by bombing Iran in the middle of fresh nuclear negotiations.

The world’s coercive logic is shifting. For 30 years after the Cold War, the message to middle powers was to stay non-nuclear and prosper. The new message, drawn from Ukraine, Libya, and now Iran, is the opposite: stay non-nuclear and stay vulnerable.

For investors and policy-watchers, this matters beyond Tehran. A world with more nuclear states (possibly Saudi, Turkish, even South Korean ones), means higher defence spending, weaker NPT enforcement, more fragile oil markets, and more brittle alliances. India, sitting next door to two nuclear neighbours, has every reason to pay close attention.

Rajiv Gandhi once warned that taking comfort in mutual destruction was “dangerous complacency.” He may turn out to have been the last serious voice for disarmament.

Because right now, the world is teaching a very different lesson. The countries that built bombs got respect. The country that gave one up got invaded. The country that never built one is getting bombed.

In 1995, a 32-year-old British restaurateur named Nick Jones opened a small members-only club above a Greek Street restaurant in London’s Soho district. He called it Soho House. Three decades later, that single floor has become a global empire of more than 40 locations and over 267,000 paying members. And it isn’t alone.

There’s Casa Cipriani in Lower Manhattan, where the monthly fee is $4,000 and members reportedly got booted for leaking pictures of Taylor Swift. There’s Aman New York, where the initiation fee is a casual $200,000. There’s The Core Club, where even $100,000 won’t get you in if you’re the wrong kind of rich. And there’s Zero Bond, San Vicente Bungalows, The Twenty Two, Annabel’s. It’s a roll call of velvet ropes stretching from Manhattan to Mayfair.

Put it all together and the global private social club industry was valued at $28.6 billion in 2025, with forecasts suggesting it’ll nearly double to $52.3 billion by 2034. Soho House itself was just taken private in a £2 billion ($2.7 billion) buyout led by MCR Hotels, Apollo, and Goldman Sachs, with Ashton Kutcher rolling over his equity to join the board.

So clearly, people are paying serious money to hang out with other people in rooms that look nice.

But here’s the strange part: this wasn’t supposed to happen.

The decade clubs almost died

For most of the 2010s, the obituary for club culture was already being drafted. The old gentlemen’s clubs of Pall Mall were dismissed as colonial relics. American country clubs were hemorrhaging members. Rotary Clubs and Lions Clubs were bleeding membership decade after decade. Robert Putnam’s famous warning in Bowling Alone, that Americans were retreating from civic life, seemed to have finally come true.

The villain was familiar. The smartphone made strangers obsolete. Netflix made the living room a fortress. WhatsApp made even friendships transactional. Sociologists started calling it the disappearance of the “third place”, or the cafés, libraries, and clubs that sit between home and work and hold a society together.

Public library visits in the US fell more than 56% between 2012 and 2022. The number of Americans working from home more than doubled from 2019 to 2023, killing off the daily commute, which was once a place where you’d see strangers reading books and maybe even strike up a conversation. Dinner parties were down 30% from 2000 levels, which were themselves already 45% below the 1950s.

And then came the loneliness epidemic. Young adults today report being almost twice as likely to feel lonely as people over 65. The US Surgeon General called it a public health crisis.

It looked like a death spiral.

The plot twist

Except people, it turns out, really hate being lonely.

Somewhere around 2021, after lockdowns, after Zoom fatigue, after a generation discovered that infinite TikTok scrolling does not actually substitute for human contact, the pendulum swung back. Hard.

Soho House saw membership jump from 112,000 in July 2021 to over 267,000 by late 2024. That’s a climb so steep that the club had to cap intake at 200,000 to stop locations from feeling crowded. Donald Trump Jr. opened a Washington D.C. club with a $500,000 membership fee, and there’s still a waitlist. Tiger Woods and Mike Trout are building a private golf club in New Jersey. Equinox added hotel rooms. Cipriani added apartments. Harrods is launching a private shopping suite in Shanghai.

But the comeback isn’t just at the top end. It’s everywhere, and often, weirdly, in the form of books.

Across the US and UK, a strange new luxury product has emerged: the reading retreat. Bloomberg recently profiled operators like Page Break ($1,000–$1,200), Bad Bitch Book Club ($950–$1,750), and Ladies Who Lit (up to £7,456 for a Mediterranean trip), where mostly women pay four-figure sums to sit in country houses and read in silence next to strangers. Page Break’s Joshua Tree retreat got 50 applications for 15 spots. The founder uses a lottery.

Why? Because reading retreats sell the one thing the modern economy can’t deliver: undisturbed attention in the company of others.

In other words, the same algorithms that killed the third place are now creating demand for a premium version of it.

And then there’s India

You’d think India, with its colonial-era gymkhanas and golf clubs, already had this figured out. And it did, for a very specific demographic.

The problem? Getting into the Bombay Gymkhana or the Delhi Golf Club can take up to 30 years. These are places where your father had to be a member. Or his father. They were built for bureaucrats, erstwhile royals, and senior corporate honchos, not for a 28-year-old founder who just raised a Series A.

India’s new wealth needed somewhere to go. And the market noticed.

Soho House opened its first and only Indian house so far in Juhu, Mumbai in 2018 with annual fees ranging from ₹1.6 lakh to ₹6 lakh. Nearly 46% of its Mumbai members are under 35. Then came The Quorum in Gurugram, Mumbai and Hyderabad, charging ₹3-5 lakh as joining fees and ₹1-2 lakh annually, now boasting over 3,000 members. Bengaluru got BLVD (₹6 lakh annual). Mumbai got Aryaman Birla’s Jolie’s Club. The Ambanis launched The Bay Club, managed by Oberoi.

In total, more than 25 such clubs are now operational, with at least half a dozen more, backed by St. Regis, Four Seasons and others are in the pipeline. According to Axon Developers, the Indian private members’ club market is growing at a CAGR of 17.8% and will hit ₹941 crore by 2027.

But that’s just the premium layer. The real story is underneath.

Because young India, or the nearly broke India, the salaried India, the scrolling India, has been building its own version of club culture. It just doesn’t cost ₹6 lakh.

There are run clubs. After Strava reported a 59% jump in running-club activity in India in one year, group runs have multiplied across Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, and Delhi. Mumbai Road Runners. Pudhechala. Striders. Bengaluru’s tech crowd has embraced 5 a.m. tempo runs the way it once embraced offsites.

There are book clubs. Bring Your Own Book (BYOB) runs chapters across six cities. Bound Together Bombay rotates between Bandra and Colaba on Saturdays. Atta Galatta in Bengaluru. The White Crow in Mumbai. Broke Bibliophile. Some Delhi groups even run “silent book clubs,” where you just sit and read together for an hour. These are India’s own grassroots version of those $1,000 Bloomberg retreats, minus three zeros and the Welsh countryside.

There are supper clubs. Pottery clubs. Cycling clubs. Whisky clubs. Sketch clubs.

The pattern is the same one playing out in New York and London, just stripped of the velvet rope. The Bay Club, Soho House, and a Saturday park book meet-up are all selling the same thing: a place to belong that isn’t your office or your kitchen.

The Takeaway

Two industries are emerging from the rubble of the third place. One is luxury, or the $41 billion private club business, India included. The other is grassroots, or the run clubs and book clubs and supper clubs filling Mumbai parks and Bengaluru cafés on weekends.

Both are bets on the same thesis: that human beings, even very online ones, eventually want to be in the same room.

For investors, that means private members’ clubs, premium hospitality, and community-led brands have a real tailwind, not a fad. For everyone else, it’s simpler: the cheapest, oldest hobby remains startlingly underrated. Find people. Show up. Repeat.

Turns out, the algorithm couldn’t replace that one.

In November 2023, a single bottle of The Macallan 1926, aged in a sherry cask for 60 years, bottled in 1986, and labelled by Italian painter Valerio Adami, sold at Sotheby’s in London for £2,187,500 ($2.7 million).

The distillery’s original price in 1986 was £5,000. By 2023, that same bottle had become the most expensive spirit ever sold at auction, fetching nearly 437 times its original value. Sotheby’s had expected it to go for £750,000 to £1.2 million. It nearly doubled the high estimate.

This isn’t a freak outcome. It’s the logical endpoint of a long-running reality that collectors, investors, and wealthy connoisseurs have understood for decades: rare whisky doesn’t just retain value. It creates it. The same principle has animated the whisky cask investment market, where buyers purchase entire barrels of spirit still maturing, as long-duration alternative assets. It’s the same logic behind Japanese buyers hoarding Scotch in the 1990s.

Now, the geography of opportunity has shifted. American bourbon, the world’s other great aged spirit, has entered a rare window where prices have dropped significantly, supply is unusually high, and the long-term fundamentals remain intact. For collectors willing to think like investors, the timing looks surprisingly good.

What’s Happening to Bourbon Prices?

The short version? A twenty-year boom just ran into a wall.

According to US Treasury data, American whiskey distillers produced 218 million proof gallons in 2019 (each proof gallon is 50% alcohol). Pandemic-era demand pushed that to a peak of 299 million gallons in 2023. Distilleries, flush with orders and bullish projections, doubled down, filling barrels, building sprawling rickhouses, and locking in capacity for years of growth.

P.S, Do you know where the word “proof”, used to measure the content of alcohol in a liquid comes from? You see, back in the 16th century, England used a test for a proof of alcohol content liquor. They would soak gunpowder with the liquid being tested and try to burn it. If the soaked gunpowder caught on fire, it would serve as proof that it had enough alcohol in it (about 57% by volume).

Getting back to the topic, after years of growth for US distillers, the hangover arrived. The “sober curious” movement, GLP-1 weight-loss medications (turns out, it really kills ALL cravings), and the slow migration of younger consumers toward cannabis alternatives have collectively dented alcohol volumes. The Distilled Spirits Council of the US reported that American whiskey exports dropped 19% to $1.08 billion in 2025. EU sales fell 35%. Canada dropped 57%. Trump’s trade war, which imposed a 10% tariff on the UK and 15% on the EU, made expansion into new markets difficult just as existing ones were retreating.

Production has followed demand down hard. From January to October 2025, American whiskey distilleries produced 177 million gallons, a 28% decrease from the same period in 2024, and lower even than 2019.

The secondary market has responded. Blake Riber, owner of DC-based retailer Seelbach’s, told Bloomberg that George T. Stagg 15-year-old, which sold for $1,500–$1,600 in the secondary market in 2023 and 2024, now goes for around $700–$800. Still well above its $150 retail price, but for a collector, that gap is precisely where opportunity lives.

Why It’s Happening — and Which Brands to Watch

The wave of whiskey that distilleries enthusiastically put into barrels during 2019–2023 is now maturing and arriving at market simultaneously. Straight bourbons, required to age at least two years, and bottled-in-bond bourbons, aged a minimum of four years in a federally bonded warehouse, are flooding shelves at the exact moment consumer demand has pulled back.

The response from major producers has been swift. Jim Beam, owned by Japan’s Suntory, announced a one-year production pause at its flagship facility. MGP Ingredients, which produces for George Remus, Bulleit Rye, Yellowstone, and others, idled two facilities for at least a year. Diageo halted production at Balcones and Cascade Hollow (George Dickel) last September.

This is the “whisky loch” moment for bourbon, a phrase coined for the 1980s Scotch glut, when oversupply led to widespread distillery closures. Those distilleries are now “ghost distilleries,” and bottles from them routinely sell for multiples of their original price. Collectors who bought Port Ellen or Brora in the 1990s look prescient today. E&J Gallo’s $775 million acquisition of Four Roses Distillery from Japan’s Kirin Holdings, finalised in April 2026, signals that serious money still believes in bourbon’s long-term trajectory.

Among names recommended by experts: the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, described by both Sotheby’s specialist Zev Glesta and retailer Blake Riber as a “blue chip” and a “safe bet”, with its 25th edition now including a rare Eagle Rare 17-year-old. Wild Turkey’s Master’s Keep Beacon became an instant collectible after being announced as the 10th and final release in its celebrated series. Old Forester Birthday Bourbon, an annual single-day production bottling released since 2002, is described as “very hot right now” by Mahesh Patel, founder of the Universal Whisky Experience. And for those building verticals, Westland’s Garryana single malt, already rarer after 3,000 bottles were stolen from its warehouse in 2025, has experts suggesting collectors try to assemble all 10 editions.

The collector’s rule of thumb is age statements, experimental cask finishes, and “firsts” in a limited series tend to hold and build value best. And the final failsafe, as Tommy Tardie of New York’s Flatiron Room puts it: “If it’s not going in the direction you want, you can always crack it and drink it. It’s not like a stock that’s going to go to junk.”

The India Angle

India is the world’s largest whisky market by volume, consuming over 50% of the world’s whisky production. But the collectibles conversation, the one happening around Pappy Van Winkles and Macallan 1926s has, until recently, been largely one-sided: Indians consuming, not investing.

That’s slowly changing, and it’s being driven by homegrown brands that have earned serious international credentials. Amrut, the Bengaluru distillery that shocked the global whisky world when its Fusion was named “Third Finest Whisky in the World” in Jim Murray’s 2010 Whisky Bible, now produces collector-oriented single cask series and released the Amrut Expedition in early 2025, a 15-year, 75-bottle limited release priced above $10,000 per bottle, complete with NFC authentication tags and individually engraved cases. At that price point, it’s more of an asset than a drink.

Paul John, distilled in Goa where the tropical climate accelerates maturation so sharply that four years in Goa is roughly equivalent to 15 years in Scotland, won World’s Best Indian Single Malt at the World Whiskies Awards 2026 for its Port Select Cask. Indri, the Haryana-based triple-cask single malt from Piccadily Distilleries, has built a collector’s following with annual Diwali limited editions. Rampur, from one of India’s oldest distilleries in Uttar Pradesh, has produced world-firsts like the Asava, finished in Indian Cabernet Sauvignon casks.

In 2023, 345,000 of the 675,000 single malt cases sold in India were of Indian origin. That’s more than half. The combination of national pride, rising affluence, and global recognition is creating the conditions for an Indian collector market that mirrors what Japanese whisky experienced two decades ago: from regional curiosity to globally sought-after, expensive, and hard to find.

The investment infrastructure isn’t there yet. India lacks the mature auction ecosystem, third-party authentication services, and secondary market depth that make whisky collecting a liquid asset class in the UK or US. Regulatory complexity around alcohol and import duties adds friction. And formal whisky investment vehicles remain largely inaccessible to Indian retail investors.

The Takeaway

The Macallan 1926 sold for $2.7 million because time, scarcity, and craft converged perfectly. American bourbon is currently at the opposite end of that arc, abundant, temporarily out of fashion, and trading at discounts. The question for any collector is whether today’s overlooked bottle becomes tomorrow’s ghost distillery legend.

For Indian investors watching from the sidelines: the homegrown story is real, the brands are world-class, and the window to build a collection before the rest of the world notices is still open. Whisky rewards patience. Forty years ago, no one thought a £5,000 bottle would become a $2.7 million one.
